Product Description

Product Description

For more than twenty years, millions of British television viewers tuned in to watch a true wizard at work. As a panellist on What's My Line? or as the host of It's Magic and many other shows, David Nixon was not just a magician, but a peerless performer whose warmth and wit made him a natural star.

David Nixon: Entertainer with the Magic Touch tells the story of a remarkable life: how David's childhood fascination with conjuring tricks led to wartime adventures with ENSA, and how he rose from running concert parties to being the nation's best-loved star.

David's personal life was one touched by tragedy. Yet for all his mastery of illusion - the mind-reading Nap Hand card trick or the mysterious mid-air disappearance of a lady in the Dizzy Limit - the easygoing on-screen image that made him a friend to every viewer was no deception, but a true reflection of a hardworking optimist who lived to entertain.

For the first time, Edwin A. Dawes and Stephen Short have interviewed David's many friends and loved ones to present a full portrait of his life. Lavishly illustrated using family photographs, publicity posters and television stills, David Nixon: Entertainer with the Magic Touch is a truly enchanting book.

I loved the book. For many my age David Nixon was a TV superstar and this book brings all those memories back to life again. After reading the book I immediately went onto YouTube and saw many of the illusions described in the book and watched with sheer delight.

David brought to his performances what many magicians (with the exception of Derren Brown) miss, namely personality and charisma. For a lot of magicians the trick is the most important thing, for David Nixon it was about connecting with his audience and the magic was just the medium he did it with.

I found the book a joy to read and his journey from amateur magician to ENSA entertainer entertaining the troops during World War 2 to TV stardom fascinating. It's obvious from the accounts of various chapters of his life he was a much loved gentle man.

The David Nixon Book 14 Dec 2009
Format:Hardcover
David Nixon was one of my childhood heroes. In those early days I was very keen on magic and could not wait to watch his magic shows on television.

Now all those happy memories come flooding back with the publication of DAVID NIXON: ENTERTAINER WITH THE MAGIC TOUCH. David Nixon's magic touch was his personality and that endeared him to millions of tv watchers.

Eddie Dawes and Steve Short have done a wonderful job in writing the Nixon biography. With the help and co-operation of Davids wife Vivienne, and children Nicholas and Mandy they have been able to bring back to life this most likable of television personalities.

The book is simply littered with photographs of David in all stages of his life, from working for ENSA in the war years to his appearing at Magic Circle functions and on the popular television show What's My Line. Play bills adorn the pages as do many of the stars of yesteryear who David worked with.

The book is 276 pages of high quality production. If you loved watching David Nixon on television you will be absolutely thrilled with this tome. The editors Eddie Dawes and Steve Short are to be congratulated on their achievement. Now all we need are a few DVDs of David in action in his heyday to complete the picture. I cannot recommend this book too highly
