Currently I am the co-author of two books. It's been an interesting journey and most of the time quite surprising. Why do I say that? Well I didn't set out to be an author it just 'sort of happened'. Also, my main talents and therefore primary focus is in the world of business, coaching across all sectors, 1:1 and with teams. So the linking of coaching and parenting, might seem a curious combination at first.
Co-author Jack and I met when he was running NLP workshops. We discovered we shared a common frustration and interest in helping others, especially youngsters, to maximise their life chances. We really wanted to make it easier than either of us had experienced. I was also finding that in coaching large organisations, there were many challenges which to some extent were 'parenting' issues. Just ask any CEO, Director or senior manager - how often do they deal with issues of conflict and disagreement with intelligent and vocal others? Show me a parent!
We started running development workshops for parents as we believed helping adults in becoming more resourceful was the best and most sustainable way to help children. Our first product was a resource pack of playing cards, followed quickly by an animated Windows based CD, where cards are dealt to the game player by a croupier!
A breakthrough moment came on one of the workshops, when an enthusiastic adult who had gained a major success with one of their youngsters announced 'you guys ought to write a book'! Truly we were starting to reach the same conclusion through another route. We were discovering similar themes and lessons recurring in the workshops. A book was the obvious answer and 'The Coaching Parent' was born!
We discovered that joint authorship produced a work, according to our readers, of immense quality. It also took a lot longer to get to market, as we kept finessing each other's work! It's not been any quicker with our follow-up work, 'The Coaching Parent Companion'. It too, from feedback, has achieved our goals of quality, relevance and value.
So I remain an author who continues to be surprised by our works selling in the UK, North America, Turkey, Australia, Germany, Italy and Poland - where a full and superb translation has been made. (If I accidentally missed your country, do get in touch and I will correct my error). My business, The Directors Coach, was founded in 2000 with the intention of 'Transforming Talent into Performance'. It is not simply a clever strap line, I am committed to this purpose. I suspect you will realise this is a thread that runs through my life.
