From a personal perspective, a good DJ should have the basis of his appeal firmly rooted in the choice of music he plays, his range and how he allows one track to relate to another.

In this day and age when many DJs are more likely to try to impress with technical ability, as oppossed to their skill in selecting music, it is a breath of fresh air to come across an album such as this that has the emphisis very much on the music.

The legendary loft parties that were held in David Mancuso's New York apartment, first in the late sixties, and concluding some thirty years later in 1998, were a melting pot and gathering place for some of the city's most innovative pioneers of the New York club scene over this period. It is testimony to the impression made by Mancuso's weekly Saturday night gatherings, that such current players as Danny Krivit and Francois K of NYC's Body & Soul, pay homage to what Mancuso achieved in the CD booklet, and their respect is apparent.

The music it'self is a joy to listen to and never fails to surprise. It is to all intents and puposes a brief family tree of club music in New York over a thirty year period. The first disk kicks off with Fred Wesley's classic "House Party", and moves into a very laid back disco sound. The first big surprise is a heavenly ten minute piece of disco on track three. I had to pinch myself when I looked at the sleeve notes, and saw that this particular track was by Demis Roussos!

Although the CDs are unmixed, the the flow of the music seems almost totally seamless, and this is purely down to the choice and order of the tracks. From what I have read of the loft, this pretty much captures the vibe of the place, and Mancuso's musical philosophy....

Disk two deals primarily with The Loft's latter years, and has more of a house music feel, from the opening track, Nu Yorican Soul's "The Nervous Track" to the penultimate offering, "Little Fluffy Clouds" by The Orb, which is a personal favourite.

I suspect that this is the inherent beauty of The Loft Vol 2. If you are into music, and have an open mind, you will find amongst it's tracks, a track that is an existing favourite, and you are bound to find one or two more that will become favourites.

I would say that If you are willing to take a chance on the outlay for this album, you will be pleasantly surprised. I certainly was. Read more ›

4.0 out of 5 stars Gourmet Dance Music by A Conniseur 11 Nov 2000

David Mancuso brings us more tracks from his long career of hosting The Loft dance parties. This two CD set ranges from 70s music like Fred Wesley's "House Party", Gerladine Hunt's "Can't Fake the Feeling" and Tamiko Jone's "Can't Live Without Your Love" to music from the 80s and 90s like Dinosaur L's "Go Bang", The Orb's "Little Fluffy Clouds" and "The Nervous Track" by Nuyorican Soul. The clarity of the recording seems to match Mancuso's efforts at The Loft to provide sound that enhanced the music without being over loud. I've enjoyed this set even more than his first one. Some stuff you don't find in most other collections like the "ballroom punk/industrial" music of "How Much Are They" by Jah Wobble, Jaki Liebezeit and Holger Czukay and the Santanaesque Latin-rock of Barabbas's "Women". If you have open, wide-ranging tastes in dance music or an interest in it's recent history, get this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good to get a party started 19 Aug 2001

This is a compilation of two cd's, one for early in the evening the other for late hours. The material contains mixed 70's Disco tracks from the famous nightclub The Loft in New York. Cd 1 sets of with a funk track called "House Party" slowly building up the entire party. Cd 1 just keep on bulding up the party atmosphere offering groovy harmonic dance tracks. Cd 2 (late)is not so much 70's Disco tracks as the first cd. It offers more deeper House tracks with a dash of groovy sexy vibes in them hopefully making the female guest at the party to let themselves a bit more loose on the dancefloor and in their conversations with the male guests. I recommend this one because it is nice to have something that almost everyone like in your House collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Different dance music 11 April 2002

This cd contains dance music that differs from the mainstream. Vey dancable and addictive grooves and baselines on the first cd especially. If the song "You can't fake the feeling" doesn't make you move, what does? As a curiosity there is the only disco song of Demis Roussos, the over 10 minute long L.O.V.E. It was almost a religous experience to hear this sentimental greek singer do it. And many others. Not only for dancefloors and parties, but suitable for listening too.
