Lucas's books have been extravagantly praised by critics, both Halibut Jackson and The Lying Carpet have been hailed as 'classics', his picture book Whale was described as 'a masterpiece'.
His illustrations have been likened to Klee and Steinberg, the depth of his ideas compared to Kierkegaard.
But his books remain simple, warm-hearted fairytales, and like all good fairytales they have a timeless appeal for adults and children alike.
