You wouldn't normally expect a solo acoustic artist and his band to be able reproduce what for most can only be achieved in the safety and comfort of a recording studio. You certainly wouldn't expect them to sound even better live, but that was my experience when I saw David's remarkable performance at the Manchester Evening News arena in November . That left me yearning for a live video or DVD concert recording to enable me to recapture some of the magic of that unforgettable experience that you just don't get on C.D. And here it was. That magic is written on every track and seen in every frame of David Gray Live at the Point, Dublin. The blurb on the cover attests to this concert being very special, marking as it does a pivotal point in David's career and , viewed by him, we are told, as an unforgettable night , more a celebration than a gig and that is clearly what has been captured on this DVD. In every one of the seventeen tracks David performs here, his unique voice is clear, confident and powerful and he looks a remarkably happy and fulfilled person, turning now and again to others in the band and exchanging knowing smiles and really enjoying himself in that unassuming way he has. No need or place for flashy showmanship; David and his musicians are totally focussed on what they are doing. Who wouldn't enjoy being on that stage with such a knowledgeable and appreciative audience and making and hearing the sounds of those instruments and voices live, blending ,as they do together, so beautifully with David and his lyrics. I have all David's C.D's but there is, believe me, no substitute for seeing him live. The nearest you can get is a DVD like the Point concert, and I just hope his management will seriously consider releasing ( soon) another David Live concert on DVD . The quality of the new songs on 'A New Day at Midnight' and the recent Apple Studio Concert confirms that David just gets better and better.

This is a must have for all David Gray fans. This must rank as one of the best ever concert DVDs; yes The Eagles - Hell Freezes Over has a slightly crisper (DTS) soundtrack, but this DVD captures the concert atmosphere better. I have seen David Gray live and this comes close to matching the experience.

One of those few live DVD's (or videos for that matter) that manages to get the balance right between enhanced visual entertainment and the sheer simplicity of the music itself. David Gray's stage show is anything but lavish: plain, straightforward, just a few projected backdrops now and again and the odd flashy light. But the strength of the music here is what really blows you away; the audience were clearly in their element throughout, and you can really feel the magic of how it must have felt to be there in the crowd.
I'd only ever really heard White Ladder before buying this, so all the older songs were new to me. I can tell you I've since gone out and bought the entire David Gray back catalogue on the strength of this performance. "Shine" in particular will set your hair standing on end. "Coming Down" will too. And "Late Night Radio", "Wisdom" and "A Century Ends" are all brilliant too (David even manages to swap guitars mid-song when he breaks a string, without missing a beat, much to the audience's delight).
On the technical side, the visual quality is fantastic, it's well edited together and manages to really capture the atmosphere of the concert. The sound quality is generally excellent, with just a few wobbly bits around "This Year's Love".
The documentary ("Up to a Point") is interesting, and shows you a little of the background to David's tour aroud Ireland, though I'd say it would have been even better if they'd shortened it a bit - it's a bit slow.
Overall, then, one of the best live DVD's I've seen. I was addicted to it for several weeks, and stopped short of seeking professional help to break the habit when finally my attention was diverted by the U2 Live in Boston DVD, which is also superb.

a night to remember
