To the general 60's/70's music fan,the name David Gates simply means his hit group of the early 70's' Bread',but to devotees of the 60's Girl Group Sound,David Gates is one of the holy trio of 60's Girl Group Sound producers.alongside Phil Spector and Van McCoy-,responsible for some of the genre's jewels(The Girlfriend's thundering' My One&Only Jimmy Boy'-the Spector. imitation to end all Spector imitations to name just one)To Northern Soul fans, too he is a justly revered name, having been responsible for producing and/or writing such beloved Northern favourites as Margaret Mandolph's two treasures 'Something Beautiful' and 'If You Ever Need Me ' on his own great 'Planetary' label and Suzi Wallis' superlative 'Tell Him' on RCA.I've been waiting&hoping for a CD of David Gates' productions for years and now it's here. Many tracks are making their CD debut of course it's;so wonderful to have Margaret Mandolph's sublime rare beauty 'If You Ever Need Me' on CD at last and in great sound, but it's a little disappointing that the A side of Margaret's other 45' the equally,if not even more exquisite 'I Want To Make You Happy' isn't included-this track still hasn't made it to any CD I know of-I can understand not including her Northern classic 'Something Beautiful' as it has appeared on Northern Soul CD's but why not 'I Want To Make You Happy '? This is the one very slight complaint, though.Rare Rockin' Records should be eternally thanked for ,if nothing else, simply for putting Suzi Wallis' magnificent 'Tell Him'(not the Exciters song) on CD at last in fantastic sound;this is one of THE masterpieces of the Girl Group Sound,of 60's female Pop even,in my view; and David Gates once said he couldn't remember most of the records he produced in the 60's!Read more ›

Just to make clear that this review is for the cd and not the MP3 edition. This is a great cd (73.03mins.) of David Gates early work from 1962 to 67 from 'Rare Rockin' Records'. It comes with a fantastic 32 page colour booklet that has a wealth of pics and label scans along with track by track information. Overall, the sound quality is good - with most tracks taken from the master tapes and some tracks from disc dubs (one or two have a little distortion and sound slightly shallow). Most tracks are in mono and 6 are in stereo (Tracks - 2,3,13,16,29 & 32 are Stereo). As for the quality of music, this never really dips below 7/10 - most are very good with more than a handful of excellent tracks like 'If you ever need me' by Margaret Mandolph, 'I think i'm gonna cry' by Gail Ganley and 'Tell him' by Suzy Wallis. There is no real filler, there's even an unreleased demo by David 'You'll be needin' me'. Great compilation, recommended. 4.5 stars would be more accurate.

Though Gates has been compared to Phil Spector he is many times more talented even if he DID copy the Wall Of Sound for the simple reason that he admitted just what he copied.Unlike Spector who never said anything other than how brilliant he was.
In spite of that his name was never known until the Bread years and even then it was about the time Telly Savalas topped the charts with a monologue of the Bread song If.
Gates has recorded under many different names including Del Ashley and as a duo with Leon Russell (as David & Lee on Garpax)while during the British Invasion he was the Manchesters
So here's the new Rare Rockin' Records latest release following 2 other songwriter collections in Burt Bacharach and Billy Meshell. It comes with a detailed booklet and covers the 5 year period 1962-67
