Book Description

16 Nov 2007 Real Reads
Real Reads -- the classics retold and beautifully illustrated. Real Reads are a new and exciting way of presenting our literary heritage to a new audience: bright young primary readers, children who have seen the films and now want the books, teenagers who want to read the classics but aren't yet ready for the original, grown-up readers who want a quick fix of their favourite classical author, less confident readers who don't want to be left out of real books, learners of English who want to explore the classics everyone talks about. For more information, please visit RealReads.co.uk. When David's mother marries the malevolent Mr Murdstone, David's childhood happiness is destroyed for ever. Can one lonely little boy show the strength and determination to survive the dangers that lie ahead? Travelling along the rocky road from boyhood to manhood, how can David learn who to trust and who to love? Will David's friends bring him happiness or heartache? In this inspiring tale of trust, betrayal, courage and love, Charles Dickens presents a world of colourful characters to amuse us, astonish us, disgust us and move us to tears. Once encountered, David Copperfield's friends and enemies will never be forgotten.

Miniature Masterpieces --BBC Radio 4 Open Book

Like other Real Reads, too, the novels are not designed to replace the originals, but to complement them. The publisher s hope is that for some readers, the Real Reads are a springboard into the original texts; for others it is to broaden their range of cultural experience and introduce them to a world of wonderful plots and characters. What makes these retellings particularly appealing from a classroom point of view is that significant attention is paid to the language use characteristic of the authors. The novels are retold with some integrity to the original that is that some of the cadence of Dickens is retained; that some of the vocabulary remains authentic, and that some of those seminal passages remain relatively unaltered. --(Extract) Jane Campion in Use of English Nov 2012. The magazine of The English Association

Another great read. Well set out and easy for children to access. I bought this for a child with dyslexia who needed to be familiar with stories by Charles Dickens. He loved it and I have bought more in the series.
