5.0 out of 5 stars It was worth the wait! 14 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I waited and waited for this book to get published, and after a few delays it eventually became available.
I'm pleased I waited and didn't buy one of the competitor publications, that, judging from reviews, appear to be padded out versions of the Canon manual.
This book is informative, well laid out, and I've found information therein easy to find, and useful also, AND actually adds to what's in the Canon manual!

3.0 out of 5 stars OK, but long winded. 4 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Actually the issued manual with the CanonEOS 5D MkII is not too bad, it just needs expanding. However whilst at 452 pages David Busch's guide is an enormous book, it is far too verbose, yet still manages to leave the reader confused. The few new small bits of information get lost in the paragraph after paragraph of meandering prose, which by the time you get to the end think "that's that's all very well but it did not actually tell how I do this or that, or what exactly do I need to press to get this done."
The words, 'concise', 'clear', 'simple', 'straightforward', do not seem to be understood by the author. I am still confused about many aspects of this great, but very complicated camera.
My previous camera manual for my T90 was a quarter of the pages yet managed to explain everything in a clear and CONCISE manner. I cannot compare this to the other manuals by Amazon, but I shall be certainly looking for a different manual in the shops that gives all the little practical tips without reams of waffle.
I cannot recommend this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really helpful information 17 April 2011
By Momco
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I'm not new to digital photography, but have recently changed brand loyalties and moved to my first full frame digital camera.
This book is invaluable information. Clearly sets out the basics and goes onto the advanced. Has really helped me to work out how to use my new camera, and will travel with me until I know as much about my camera as is contained in the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Quite disappointed with this book 14 Feb 2011
By OT8.
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I'm a professional photographer and have been for some years but I'm not a know it all. When I bought my 5d mark 2 two years ago I sat and read the entire manual cover to cover with the camera in front of me playing with each function as it appeared in the instructions, making test shots as I went along and seeing for myself the results. Whilst this gave me a good understanding of the camera I felt the supplied manual lacked clarity in certain areas.

I decided I needed a expanding manual. As I recall the guides to cameras from 15 years ago used to go into every single function in depth and talk about ways around those lacking features. I learnt a great deal about photography from those.

When this book arrived I was cheerful to see it was 400 pages long, surely a guide this big wouldn't lack a thing sadly I was wrong. I found several examples of where huge chunks of what would be valued information is missing. For example the writer makes no mention of shooting sRAW at high ISO and how this helps with colour noise. Instead only seeing it as a way of making smaller files and saving memory. Again the writer talks about setting a customer white balance but doesn't talk about understanding true colour shifts in any depth (even with digital this can only really be done with the aid of a colour chart and or filters on camera)

In summary this is an OK book but it's far from a true guide. The 5d mk2 is an outstanding camera there is a lot more that can be done with this camera with a few minor in camera adjustments than is ever mentioned in this guide. Personally I question is the purchase really going to help improve anyones photography much beyond that of the basic manual and a little reading on the net.

Excellent Guide. Recently took delivery of a 5D MKII and this book is so much better than reading the Canon manual. Really covers the basic functions and capabilities of the camera well, but throws in quite a lot of really good advise about getting the best out the camera. I think it will be a good reference source going forward.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book 29 July 2011
By Conedxf
Bought this book to accompany my new camera. It is an excellent supplement to the somewhat inadequate manual. You can either work through the book in a serial fashion, which provides a decent basic photography course as well as teaching you a lot about how the camera works, or you can dipp in and use it as a reference manual. It is illustrated with a number of really clear colour photograpghs to illustrate the points being made. As a long time Canon owner, I still found it extreamly useful.
This is the manual Canon should send out with it's Cameras.
Excellent value for money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow camera guide 30 May 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This guide to the Canon EOS 5D mark II is easy to read and follow and supplements the Canon manual perfectly. Tells you why you should set your camera up in a particular way through the various menus on the camera and elaborates in more detail the various options available to the photographer. Having read it from cover to cover I now am just able to dip in to sections to refresh my memory on items/features as and when I require them. The book is never too far away from my camera although it does not go on field trips due to its size. Good value for money for the serious photographer who wants to get more from their camera.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good for stills. Not good for video 22 Feb 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
If, like me you mostly wanted to learn about the canon 5D's video capability then you will be dissapointed in this book. It is very comprehensive for stills photography but barely scratches the surface of video. You would be better searching online.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Ultimately disappointing. Verbose, repetitive and does not add much more than a sensible peruse of the supplied manual, with the camera to hand, provides.
