David Beerling hails from Kent, the garden of England, and works at the University of Sheffield. For twenty years, he has led a research group investigating major scientific questions concerning the co-evolution of terrestrial plants and the environment. Slowly a new bigger picture about plants and Earth history began to nucleate in his mind. This resulted in his first popular science book "The Emerald Planet. How Plants Changed Earth's History" which, much to his surprise, received critical acclaim from the public and his academic peers.
Overwhelming interest in the book meant that in 2011-12, he acted as the Series Consultant to the BBC for their excellent "How to Grow a Planet" television series, which is a major new three-part series largely based on the Emerald Planet, and narrated by Iain Stewart. The book and TV series both argue the case for plants to be recognized as a geological force of nature.
