Yes, I'd be the first to admit that David Bedford is something of an acquired taste. Most of what I have listened to has been his more progressive electronic works, some in collaboration with Mike Oldfield. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner took some getting into - but was worth it. Stars End is a hard listen, but if you work at it, you'll get it - he weaves profound and stimulating harmonies, and Oldfield's guitar solos are great.
But THIS CD is just a gem. The First Symphony has Walton or Copland-esque qualities, but is very much it's own piece in its own style. The Recorder Concerto is just a delight. Look at how Bedford weaves very different Recorder themes in with a very carefully pitched strings orchestra. It's just lovely. Every time I listen to it, there's a new harmonic, a new layer or theme I did not spot before. It's also a very good recording - the complimentary harmonics of the recorder are brought out perfectly against the orchestral background. Why is no-one buying it? The previous reviewer was bang-on. When Bedford gets it right, he is absolutely spot on.
