Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

David Bailey's name is synonymous with the Swinging Sixties, when fashion photography became big business, and the person behind the camera had the ability to become as famous as the celebrities who posed for them. And Bailey was the most famous of them all--the East-End boy who became best friends with the Beatles and the Stones, the lover of actress Catherine Deneuve and model Jean Shrimpton, while chronicling them all in a series of unmistakable, unforgettable shots. David Bailey: Archive One 1957- 1969, published to coincide with "The Birth of Cool" retrospective exhibition at London's Barbican Gallery, delves into Bailey's archive and reproduces some of his earliest work, and some previously unpublished documentary stills, as well as showing the spectacular images that made his name. The result is a treasure-trove of images from one of the most exciting periods in the 20th century, when the cult of youth, fame and glamour was worshipped and--in this case--most beautifully recorded. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Format:Hardcover
This stunning book perfectly illustrates Bailey's skills as both artist and technician. His appreciation of beauty and his attention to detail ensure his work endures in the fast changing world of fashion photography. Every page of this lavishly illustrated book provides fresh and fascinating glimpses of the period, and confirmation of what made Bailey one of the great photographers of the 1960's.

Inspirational 16 Oct 2002
Format:Hardcover
David Baileys true ability as a photographer shines out in this book with some stunning portraits. The amount of text is limited, although this is not a problem as it perfectly links the images with the history of the time. With a lot of photo books I tend to look at the images and decide my views on the photo then move on. With this book however, I find myself either going back to the same images again and again, or looking at one particular image for a long time. Although many of the images were created for fashion magazines, Bailey still seems to have taken them firstly as a portrait and then secondly as a fashion shot.
Superb.

Great Book but Same as Birth of the Cool 30 Nov 2009
By Bored of Folk - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This is a great compilation of Bailey's best b/w photography from the 60s. Watch out though, this is the same book as Birth of the Cool but with a different cover and title!
