I must admit to being a big David Bailey fan, so when I saw an autographed copy for sale, I could not resist. Bought from Claire de Rouen Books on Charing Cross Road. A great little bookshop in a hidden way location. Just google Claire de Rouen to find out more. It has to be one of the best photography bookshops in London. If just one person reads this review and makes the trip, it will just go to show that amazon can introduce people to real bookshops.
Anyway, back to the book. The photographs are a collection of images, mainly portraits, from over the past 40 years - from the early 60's to the present day. Do read the introductory text from Tony Shafrazi - it sets the context for the images that follow and captures the essence of an era. For me, DB defines the word "cool" with his innovative and stylish fashion images from the 60's. I just love these images - portaits of John Houston, Andy Warhol, Roman Polanski, Cecil Beaton, Peter Ustinov and Man Ray. This probably explains why
David Bailey : Archive One 1957 - 1969 is still one of my favourite David Bailey book. But later potraits still stand out and their eyes jump out of the page. My favourites are Peter Blake, Francis Bacon, and fellow photographer Ansel Adams.
A great collection of images from a career spannng over 40 years. Recommended.
