DVD Description

“A discovery of great significance” --David Attenborough

When scientists announced the discovery of Ida, the most complete early primate fossil ever found, the world was stunned by the extraordinary detail preserved for 47 million years. And the debate began about Ida’s place in the story of evolution. Could she be one of our earliest ancestors – a remarkable link between the first primates and modern humans?

With exclusive access to Ida, and the team of world-renowned scientists studying her, this documentary film follows the amazing detective story that followed Ida’s discovery, carried out in secret for two years.

Using the latest scientific techniques to anaylse and verify the fossil, the team begins to piece together Ida’s forensic secrets, and investigate the link between Ida and human evolution.

Using state-of-the-art graphics, The Link takes us on an epic evolutionary journey, opening a stunningly evocative window into our past, showing how Ida changes what we know about primate evolution, and ultimately, challenging our idea of what it is to be human and where we came from.

EXTRAS:
Special features include an interview with David Attenborough, additional insights into Ida and her background from the experts and behind the scenes footage.

The Link follows in a long line of interesting documentaries from the BBC natural history unit and Sir David Attenborough. It details the discovery of one of the most complete skeletons ever of one of our primate ancestors, how it was found, the deals involved in purchasing it and its detailed analysis by a team of scientists. The story plays out a bit like a detective novel with a cast of enthusiastic scientists. Recommended if you are into natural history.

As far as the presentation is concerned, I did not like "The Link". It disappointed me in the following ways:
A] We still don't know [and I guess we will never know] who discovered this fossil. All we are told is that it was acquired by a scientist in a fossil fare.
B] Ida shows a clear connection with apes and is not related to the Lemur branch. However, this point is made laboriously. Instead of saying how she was our ancestor and not the common ancestor for apes and lemurs, the presentation carries on and on, as if to unfold a mystery. It is so obvious when you see the fossil that there is no need to make this long winded story about this linkage.
C] It could have been finished in half the time. They keep repeating the same information, same sentences even.
D] It is less scientific and more dramatic.
E] As much as I adore Attenborough, his narrative is lately stuck in his own style. We could do with a fresh voice.

The plus points are:
A] Of course the story of Ida and the significance of this extraordinary fossil is tremendous. This could be finished in 30 minutes!

A excellent BBC production. The scientists explain the significance of the fossil and their investigations in their own words. Little in the way of irritating poor quality reconstructions and more factual content. I wish more BBC documentaries were produced this way.
