Synopsis

A seven-disc box set containing three of David Attenborough's most-loves series.

Trials of Life - Originally broadcast in 1990, Trials of Life is still one of the most comprehensive wildlife documentaries ever made. It examines animal behaviour in all its infinite variety and in doing so we are allowed to witness some ofthe most enchanting animal personalities, as will as some of the most fearsome.
Life in the Freezer - A wildlife/natural world series which looks at how all forms of life in Antarctia survive in extremes of temerature and wind.
Life of Birds - A series of ten fifty-minute episodes which present a fascinating and exciting view of the world of birds, the largest animal group on earth.

Be Warned. 12 Dec 2004
This Box Set should be a must buy BUT I advise potential purchasers to be patient because unfortunately this set includes the EDITED version of 'Trials Of Life', each 45min episode reduced to 30mins. The unedited version is now available on it's own and hopefully this boxset will be reissued to include it but that probably won't be for a while.

Other than that this boxset is perfect.

An astounding collection 16 April 2006
Before I erupt into rapture about what a fantastic collection of breathtaking natural history programmes are to be found in this box, I should first reassure the previous reviewer and anyone who may be concerned about the brutal butchery of editors, that the "Trials of Life" series currently bundled with this package is 583 minutes long, spanning 12 programmes of about 48 minutes each. Also, bear in mind that Amazon is a very reasonable sort of supplier and is likely to allow you to return items that you are not satisfied with. You can always email them, asking for confirmation of this. End of reassurance message. This is what's in the box:

"The Life of Birds" is my personal favourite because I have a particular love of birds and this series really is packed with the most fabulous images of birds. There are 10 episodes of about 48 minutes each, entitled: To Fly or Not to Fly, The Mastery of Flight, The Insatiable Appetite, Meat Eaters, Fishing for a Living, Signals and Songs, Finding Partners, The Demands of the Egg, The Problems of Parenthood, The Limits of Endurance.

"The Trials of Life" is a fascinating study of animal behaviours - the great variety of strategies employed by different species to survive and reproduce. There are 12 episodes (plus a 'Making Of' documentary) of about 48 minutes each, entitled: Arriving, Growing Up, Finding Food, Hunting and Escaping, Finding the Way, Homemaking, Living Together, Fighting, Friends and Rivals, Talking to Strangers, Courting, Continuing the Line.

"Life in the Freezer" is all about how the animals who live in the Antarctic region survive and cope with the extreme cold and the harsh weather conditions of that area. There are 6 episodes of about half an hour each, entitled: The Bountiful Sea, The Ice Retreats, The Race to Breed, The Door Closes, The Big Freeze, Footsteps in the Snow.

Not only is there an astonishing wealth of information in these series but the photography is stunning and the presentation is impeccable. I can't recommend this DVD collection highly enough.

When I bought this dvd box, I was a bit anxious about the quality of the graphics because some reviewers mentioned a grainy look. So when it arrived, I put it in my Playstation 2 as soon as possible. If you're worried about the same, you can relax now: it is not bad at all. Of course, compared to the brilliant and vibrant 'The Blue Planet', which is also in my collection, this dvd footage looks somewhat pale and flat, but one shouldn't forget that the latter is much more recent.

In the box, you'll find three luxury boxes, one for each series:
The life of birds (1998 - 489 mins), Trials of Life (1990 - 358 mins) and Life in the Freezer (1993 - 174 mins). All have a 4X3 ratio only, and Life in the Freezer, in my humble opinion is the most vibrant in colours.

English is not my mothertongue, so I would have liked subtitling in many languages, but that is not the case: a missed opportunity. There is English subtitling, though. A nice touch: in 'life in the freezer' the subtitling is blueisch: not a luxury, taking into account all the ice and snow!

The quality of the scripts, for all 3 series is, of course, brilliant and beyond discussion.

I gave this box 4 stars, not 5, because this dvd box fails to equal the quality of 'The Blue Planet'-box. Still, this box is a must-buy for all you nature lovers out there!
