3.0 out of 5 stars Female Reader from Berkshire UK, 28 Oct 2002
By A Customer
After purchasing and reading Dave Pelzers's three other best sellers. 1) A Boy called 'IT' 2) The Lost Boy 3) A Man Named Dave. I was intrigued to see what advice Dave Pelzer had to offer in this book.

However, I was vastly disappointed with this small book, it is definitely more of a life book that you would carry around with you in your bag and maybe refer to once in a blue moon. It took me 1/2 hour to read over. I thought that the content was extremely repetitive and that Dave struggled to give advice in depth. As a reader, you want to be able to relate your experiences to his; then work out from point A to Z how he got there and how in turn this may be of some use to you. This was not the case; this book came across like more of a preaching book than a self-help book.

Although I have every respect for Dave Pelzer and the fact that he has triumphed over the evil's he has had to endure throughout his childhood, I do not believe that the advice he gives indicates what others may be going through. I firmly believe an author has to think about what others may judge him on when they read his/her material and think about how sceptical people can be. Make a point of proving to the reader that the advice is worth listening to and learning from.

David was constantly referring to events in his past, I found this frustrating because I've already read his first three autobiography's, therefore knew everything he had previously talked about and so did not really want to re-read this information. However, if you have never read his first three books, it is very helpful to understand what he refers to in his passages, although if it were the case you were reading his book for the first time, you would definitely want to know more intricate details about what happened to him rather than fleeting comments.

As David does not own a PhD or equivalent I do not really feel that he is the best person to give un-solicited advice on how to improve yourself.

However, after all of that criticism, I do enjoy reading Dave Pelzer, he has a charismatic personality that comes across well and he is very easy to read. I like it that he talks to you as a person and he does make you stop and think at several points thorough out the book.

An OK read.
