One of the finer aspects of Dave Gorman's comedy style - his genius, if you will - is the deft way he incorporates the general public into his routines. From his grand follies, such as
Are you Dave Gorman and
Dave Gorman - Googlewhack Adventure [DVD], to his more straightforward performances, there is always a very real human element.
`Genius' - the radio series - fits perfectly into Gorman's ethos, making him the ideal frontman for this brilliantly bonkers premise. In short, Radio 4 listeners were invited to send in their ideas, concepts and inventions, with a shortlist invited into the studio to battle it out for the priceless (read `worthless') Genius trophy. Celebrity guests would have the final say on which ideas were `genius' and which were `not' before the best two faced an audience vote, the winner of which had the aforementioned silverware inflicted upon them.
Naturally, the success of such a concept depends on the brains of the British public, and thankfully our nation provided glorious nonsense in spades. From quasi-useful gadgets such as perforated bread and mobile phone breathalyzers (to prevent embarrassing drunk dials) to lunatic schemes such running the House of Commons to the rules of Just A Minute, the show's three series ran the gamut from the great to the gormless. Add to this some fine turns from the guests - Stewart Lee's appalled dismay at being asked to judge a gun that fires puppies being a particular highlight - and you have the makings of top-drawer entertainment.
If the notion tickles your fancy, then you are certainly looking at the right edition. With this set, not only do you get all three series in an alarmingly snug box, but also an entire extra episode - a Christmas special, no less - that is otherwise unavailable.
Cracking fun with an anarchic streak, yet still (mostly) clean enough to be enjoyed by all but the very young, this is the quintessential long-road-trip purchase. Add to it the sheer value of this package and you have something that all fans of comedy, invention and good old British tomfoolery should own.
