Synopsis

In Dave Gorman In America Unchained, the multi award-winning performer sets off on a journey to see if it's still possible to live in America without giving any money to 'The Man'. Travelling coast-to-coast, he's not staying in any chain hotels, eating in any chain restaurants, or filling up at any chain gas stations. On this journey, only independent "Mom & Pop" businesses will do. Of course, travelling unchained in a chained world is tricky--when you’re tired you can't just stop at a Starbucks, and when the tank is running empty you can't just pull up at the next gas station. Staying true to the task was always going to be a struggle, but the people facing the real struggle are those working to keep the unchained businesses of America alive.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great idea, average dvd.., 19 Feb 2008
By A. D. Spellman "Dave" (Blackburn, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have enjoyed Dave Gorman's other stuff and eagerly awaited this one. I have to relcutantly admit it was disappointing. Great idea, to travel across the USA only using independant gas stations, motels etc.. We see far too much of Dave predictably agonising where he'll get his next tank of 'unchained' gas etc, far too many in-car shots of anguished faces and not enough of the charachters along the way or why the journey is important.. Ultimately it turns out to be a bit dull, not enough fun, colour and interest to keep it going. Loyal fans will enjoy perhaps but not Dave's best work on this occasion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Road Documentary On Sticking It To "The Man", 29 Feb 2008
This is a brilliant little film to show that true independence maybe facing extinction due to globalisation, but Dave shows it just maybe possible to make it across America (In A Very Round About Way) without paying "The Man". There genuinely is some great moments along the journey and ultimately the film leaves you feeling with mixed emotions about the future, "The Man" may want to take over the place and make everywhere the same but its Man-Kind who can fight the good fight and not make it easy for them!

3.0 out of 5 stars Unchained, 19 Feb 2008
Dave Gorman is a talented comedian, and an excellent writer.

However, this documentary falls between two stools. There are moments that are genuinely entertaining, but there is no real vision. Yes, he wants to avoid buying food or petrol in corporate run chains but what is he really trying to prove?

It has little substance and is slightly meandering. Wheras in his stand up comedy there are always moments of real humor that really shiny, this documentary does not live up to the work of truly fine documentary makers such as Morgan Spurlock, Michael Moore, Louis Theroux or Nick Broomfield.

If you are really interested in Dave Gorman, I'd recommend buying his first two books or taking a look at his photos on flickr, all of which are really top notch. But you are unlikely to be amazed by this diverting but underwhelming film.
