If there is one thing that we should all have in common in this life, it is the love of laughter and the appreciation of those that induce it. Very few people that I have ever seen made me laugh more than Dave Allen, and it was with great sadness that I learned of his passing just a few days ago, particularly as I had only recently bought this DVD and had naturally expected to enjoy it in happier circumstances, and write this review without the use of past tense. But here goes: Dave Allen was unique in that he could perform both stand up and visual comedy with equal cutting edge genius and precision. He was the principal pioneer of what later became termed 'observation comedy', dissecting and poking fun at everyday human (and some non human) idiosyncracies, and basically reminding us that, given a balanced perspective and the natural fullness of time, humour can be found in pretty much anything. For examples of his excellent visual sketch work 'Vintage Dave Allen' is also recommended viewing, as this DVD focuses purely on stand up material. Whether the subject be telephones, timepieces, junk mail or walking the dog, the classic Dave Allen slant is as priceless as it unmissable. The world will be a far duller place without this true comedic legend.
