Book Description

Book 1 of THE BELLS OF LOWELL. The mill town of Lowell, Massachusetts, comes to life with intrigue and drama from the creative writing team of Judith Miller and Tracie Peterson. Young women at the end of the 19th century seek employment from driven men intent on transforming America's textile industry. Daughtersof the Loom features Lilly Armbruster, who is forced to work in the mills as her only means for survival. But Lilly's resentment runs deep against the "lords of the loom"--the men she believes have stolen her father's farm and caused his premature death. Her animosity happens to include Matthew Cheever, her childhood friend and one-time betrothed. Though separated by their opposing views about the future of the mill and the community that surrounds it, the emotions of their hearts still bind them. Will their dreams for the future allow their fragile love to survive?

4.0 out of 5 stars pleasant read. 13 Jun. 2013

This is a different story amongst all of today's vampires and zombies. It is set in the 1820s, when a woman was no more than a man's chattel. Our lead lass, has lost her father and her home has been sold out from under her by her brother. She has no choice but to start working long hours in a textile mill, the ones she blames for her father's death. Her childhood sweetheart works for the mills as a manager and she cannot forgive him for doing so. This is the part that mostly annoyed me about the story, who treatment of Matthew, said beau. I kind of wish he had found someone else just to serve her right (I know. Mean. But she did go on and on)
Anyway, evil brother tries to become good, our heroine makes good and everyone lives happily ever after.

There are some story lines that are started but are just forgotten, which is also annoying.

A story of love and tragedy amongst those dark satanic mills. A young bereaved girl finds herself destitute, with the only option of earning her living being the mills that she despises.

4.0 out of 5 stars The beginnings of industry. 7 Aug. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
When I first started this novel I found it a little slow. However in fact it was a really full, interesting story about the beginnings of industry in a small originally agricultural town. Entwined within this is a very pure and gentle love story.
