5.0 out of 5 stars A well-crafted tale of a time of change, 16 Jul 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Daughter of Lir (Hardcover)
The fourth volume in The Epona Sequence takes place several generations after _White Mare's Daughter_, in a time where the nomadic tribes of the steppes, the People, no longer merely ride their horses but harness them to a new, terrifying invention: the war chariot. They are once again about to embark on a war of conquest, driving westwards as they had already attempted once before, but this time there's a darkness at the heart of the tribes and their king has lost his soul to a witch. Meanwhile, in the peaceful cities of the Mothers beyond the river which the People call the boundry to the land of the dead, a new metal is being forged which might change the world as much as the chariots will.

Turblent times are about to descend on the People as well as on Lir and is neighbouring cities, and caught up in the midst of all this is is Rhian, a young woman who thinks she's the child of potter but who in truth is much more, and whose birth was preceeded by dark omens warning of the end of Lir, greatest of the cities.

Once again Tarr succeeds in blending her knowledge of history (a little familiarity with the period she writes about will undoubtedly lead to a few 'ah-ha' experiences along the way, but it is in no way necessary to enjoy the book) with her skills as a storyteller to create a fascinating and evocative story of how things might have been in this time of change. There are similiarities to the basic plot of the previous books in The Epona Sequence, but the characters are well-drawn and interesting enough that this is not detraction from the book. And, as always, the horses are as well crafted as the human characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivated, 4 Feb 2003
By kat (Australia) - See all my reviews
Daughter of Lir captivates within the first sentence ( as Judith Tarr tends to do!), then spirals the reader into a world which is painted so beautifully that you are there, heart and soul. Rhian is all strength & beauty and follows her heart on a journey of the spirit. Enduring, as only Rhian can, listening to the Goddess and pursuing her destiny.

Tarr draws you into each perspective and understanding of the character's plights. You can't help but anticipate the next page. The reader empathises so well with each focussed character and is drawn into their world.

I feel that Tarr has a talent of taking you to the very place she intends you to be and involves you as part of the story and not just an outsider. You are there.

I really enjoy Tarr's writing and don't think I would dislike any of her books. She takes me into a world that I'd rather not leave.

I can't wait to see what happens...but I don't want it to end.
