Book Description

3 Mar 2008
Zahira is a young woman of the conquered Rua people, their country occupied by another, very different culture – the Sedorne. Zahira is an orphan and has been raised to despise and distrust the occupying population, as well as to be a devout follower of the native religion. But everything changes for Zahira when her home and foster family are destroyed and she finds out some shocking truths about her heritage and real family. Realizing that it is up to her to do something about the violence and upheaval that are tearing her country apart, she must learn to accept her Sedorne origins and try to bridge the gap between the warring cultures. But when her own people suspect her of treachery for her ideas – especially after she saves the life of a Sedorne nobleman and begins to fall in love – the epic task ahead of her seems insurmountable...

4.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too 9 April 2009
By TeensReadToo TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Fifteen-year-old Zira has been raised in the House of God, unaware of her true identity and with no memory of her family. She only knows they were killed when the Sedorne soldiers invaded Ruan.

Training to become a warrior has become her goal and purpose, but her life changes forever when she learns she has a much nobler destiny.

Zira must learn to come to terms with her new identity as she tries to lead the Ruan people to safety. Her only hope of overthrowing the tyrannical King Abheron is to trust a Sedorne - though she's been raised to believe he's a deadly enemy.

DAUGHTER OF THE FLAMES is a mesmerizing fantasy as well as a coming-of-age story told through brilliant prose and exciting plotting. Zira's story moves like a wildfire, burning her character into the reader's memory and heart.

Marriot does a magnificent job of characterization and brings Zira's world to life with ease. I felt drawn to Zira from the moment of her introduction, and the fast pace of the story made it difficult to put the book down.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read 9 Mar 2009
Format:Paperback
I had read and enjoyed Marriott's "The Swan Kingdom" and was really looking forward to seeing what she did next. I was not disappointed by Daughter of the Flames. I loved her realistic descriptions of the way people lived and indeed the way they suffered. Her hero and heroine were likeable in their uncertainty and imperfections. I felt their relationship developed really nicely and I believed in their commitment to their people and each other. The villain was creepy and villainous yet had a strange integrity and I kept wondering if he would come good or stay bad..Zoe Marriott has taken a well populated genre and created a distinct and engaging world with strong characters. I recommend this to anyone who sighs and rolls their eyes at female fantasy characters who demand to be taken seriously and then step back and let the men take all the good weapons.

5.0 out of 5 stars My First and Definately Not My Last! 27 Dec 2008
Format:Paperback
I have not read any of Zoë Marriott's books before and, I have to admit, I'm impressed. From the first moment i picked up this book on christmas day, I was glued - and there are probably a few apologies needed to my family, whom i blocked out for hours on end as a sat on the couch with a hot chocolate in one hand and this book in the other, i have only a few pages left to read - and i cant wait to read them! it is the true definition of the 'book you can't put down' with beautiful descriptive passages and an emotional war as the reader follows the same journey through their mind as the main character takes through the book. I have never been religious, but the religious aspect of this book, which brings two groups of people against eachother, is enthrawling. It dares the reader to be different, and takes you on a journey through yourself, leaving you with the same question every time you put the book down - "who am i" - this question is also running through Zahira's mind (the lead character) as she takes you with her on her quest to find her real identity. Of course, being a teenager i love to see authors bring romance into a story like this, where the story itself would make a good book. An extra dimention is added when the handsome, but cocky, Sorin steps into the story. Infact, i think I am in love myself!
(i should add, if you chose to go for this book, you MUST read the prologue, otherwise nothing will make sense to you :D). So hopefully you will now try this book, and perhaps love it as much as i have.
