For those waiting to option the next Bridget Jones, Gemma Burgess answers back with her anti-romantic novel The Dating Detox. --Vanity Fair, VF Daily, January 13, 2010

Smart, plotty and funny, The Dating Detox is the work of a master. And it's her first book. --Herald, February 9, 2010

Product Description

If you can't date anyone nice, don't date anyone at all...Dating is a dangerous sport. So after her sixth successive failed relationship, romantically-challenged 20-something Sass decides she's had enough. The Dating Detox is born. No men, no break-ups, no problem. The result? Her life -- usually joyfully/traumatically occupied with dates, clothes and vodka -- is finally easy. Chastity rocks. No wonder nuns are always singing. Everything falls at her feet. Especially men. Will Sass break the rules? Why does fate keep throwing her in the path of the irritatingly amusing -- and gorgeous -- Jake? Will she ever roll the dice and play again? Or is a love-free life too good to risk losing? For the post-Carrie Bradshaw, post-Bridget Jones, post-credit crunch generation of singles, life isn't beautiful, a bitch, or a beach. It's a party.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chicklit detox, 24 Oct 2011
By
Trish23 (Dublin, Ireland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Dating Detox (Paperback)
My sister lent me this book when I was reeling from having read several dreadful chicklit novels. I won't name and shame them here but I was close to despairing of my favourite genre when I started The Dating Detox.
What a pleasant surprise. It had a likeable heroine in Sass who wasn't a moron, was able to manage her money, wore high street clothes and was pretty good at her job.
It had a warm, flirty, slow burning romance, a great cast of supporting characters and it was fun and romantic. I loved it.
After being dumped six times Sass has sworn off dating for three months and embarked on what she calls a 'dating sabatical' and early in the novel she relates the story of each doomed romance and it's ending. One of the things I really liked in this book was that the male characters weren't just the usual chicklit staples - the dull duds and the bastards. Sass has lots of male friends who are all portrayed as regular human beings with their own dating and relationship issues, some even demonstrating emotional maturity on more than one occasion. This means that Sass can't fall back on the usual chicklit heroine 'all men are bastards' whine about her string of disasters because she knows they aren't. There has to be more to it and it is interesting and fun to follow Sass as she gradually figures herself out and re-evaluates the relationships that have prompted her to steer clear of dating.

Gemma Burgess also manages to do what so many chicklit authors don't even realise they need to do - she makes us fall in love with the hero too, we feel the pull, we smile at the flirting, when he's 'off stage' we wonder when we'll see him again. This is so rare in chicklit now that I hardly realised how much I missed it until I felt it here and it makes a huge difference. Huge.
After all the 'is chicklit dead' furore of the last month I have to say that, while I had been starting to wonder, on the evidence of this novel - definitely not.

2.0 out of 5 stars Below average, 14 Sep 2011
This review is from: The Dating Detox (Kindle Edition)
I downloaded this book after reading all the good reviews. I wasn't impressed. I hated all the unlikely coincidences. How many people go all the way to New York for a weekend (a HUGE city, yes?) and bump into three people they know from back home who just happen to be there at the same time? I didn't think much to the main character Sass and hated the way she called everyone 'dude'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshingly different, 1 Feb 2010
This review is from: The Dating Detox (Paperback)
Quirky, funny and real. `The Dating Detox' offers a new and refreshing voice, taking `chic-lit' past Carrie Bradshaw and giving Bridget Jones a wink on the way. Sass is a strong character. She has flaws, she has strength, she has personality, she's straight talking, likeable and the kind of woman that I'd want as a friend. (That's important, isn't it?). I think that's why I'm so choosy about what I read from this genre (now that I'm in my 30s). I don't want to feel old, past it and out of touch with the modern woman. I want a main character that I `get' and one that has life experiences that I can understand.

Gemma Burgess connects reader to character, by creating Sass, an open-hearted and honest lead. And as Sass talks about her dating disasters and the `types' of men that she's `experienced', I found myself laughing out loud and nodding my head.

`The Dating Detox' is a book about female friendships, about solidarity and about personal growth. The writing feels effortless and has a warmth that will appeal to any lover of this genre, even more so to those who are slightly tired by repetitive rom-com stories. This anti-romantic comedy is refreshing and it's one that I've already recommended to several single girl friends.
