Book Description

1 Jun 2006

For 200 years Justine Bennett has been sole guardian of Desdemona's Temptation (Mona), also known as the key to eternal youth. Originally a jewel-encrusted golden goblet, today Mona is, well, an espresso machine.

Being guardian isn't easy - all forms of evil are after Mona and no one is to be trusted. With all this pressure, it's no wonder Justine has no time for a love life! And now, Derek LaValle, a famous low-carb pretzel mogul, accuses Justine of putting a curse on his family - why else do all his male relatives die at the exact same age?

Derek is desperate to save himself and his twin brother from this tragic fate. When Derek and Justine learn that Satan's disgruntled son, Satan, Jr, has cursed Derek's family, they must join forces to keep Derek alive and protect the Fountain of Youth. Along the way, Justine just might discover that dating IS possible for a guardian.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read Me Baby, More Than Once 9 Feb 2007

Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
Justine Bennett faces a huge dilemma; can she kill the man she could love in order to prevent her mum from being sent straight to Hell into the arms of a besotted Satan and herself from an eternity in The Chamber of Unspeakable Horrors? After 200 hundred years pretty much stagnating as The Guardian of Desdemona's Temptation (aka Mona the cup of eternal life) with only an 11 foot blue scaled, cybersex addicted dragon as company, Justine would be having the time of her life with all the excitement suddenly overtaking her seriously dull existence; that is if her mum's soul and her own life weren't in serious jeopardy.

Millionaire creator of the no carb pretzel, Derek LaValle knows to the second when he will die and with only one week left before his scheduled demise, he is determined to break the curse haunting the males of the LaValle line by beheading the Guardian of the Goblet of Eternal Youth and taking a long swig of the contents. One problem, after finally meeting Justine, he's now unsure whether he can put his own life, and the life of his twin brother Quincy before hers.

Justine's sort of dead mother Iris is determined not to succumb to the temptations the gorgeous Satan offers; however her daughter appears to be expediting her deportation to Hell by failing in her duties as Guardian. Instead of killing any mortal who knows the secret of The Goblet, her wayward daughter instead heals Derek with 2 sips from Mona (currently morphed into an espresso machine but later becomes a large bottle of massage oil for legitimate reasons) after almost killing him with a gunshot wound to the stomach. The now nearly immortal Derek is not one to hold a grudge and believing honesty is the key to a healthy relationship, dutifully informs Justine that he too intends to kill her.

2.0 out of 5 stars Date Me Baby, One More Time - Stephanie Rowe 5 Nov 2007
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is the literary equivalent of candy floss. Looks good, provides a few minutes of entertainment, but is ultimately mostly air and leaves you feeling you've missed something. Justine Bennett, Guardian of the Goblet of Eternal Youth, is housebound, celibate and has only an eleven-foot sex-starved dragon for company. Until Derek LaVelle comes knocking on her door. He's seeking to kill Justine as a means for ending the curse upon the men of his family - and he's only got a week to do it before the curse claims him too.

Zany, kooky, madcap and ultimately rather shallow, this is a mix of paranormal romance and comedy that doesn't quite work for me. Justine and Derek are perfectly nice characters, but that's all they are - nice. I didn't really get invested in their situation, and they were often outshone by the side characters, such as Theresa the dragon and Justine's mother Iris, who's being relentlessly courted by Satan. Justine and Derek talk alot about their immense sexual attraction and the fact that they have to kill each other, but I never felt that attraction.

The side characters are an issue all by themselves, as Rowe repeatedly labours her jokes until they become seriously unfunny. Theresa's constant quest for cybersex, pretzels and violence quickly wore thin, as she apparently has no underlying personality. Satan was ludicrous - phrases such as "love pancake" and "love muffin" just sound wrong coming from a character who's supposed to be king of Hell. And Satan Jnr? Just don't ask.

There are some nice touches, such as the Goblet's shifting into an espresso machine to fit into modern life better, and Rowe obviously has an unusual mythology for Hell that she plans to expand.

4.0 out of 5 stars Celibacy and Pretzels: A Tale of Sex 20 Oct 2006
By Joshua Koppel - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Justine Bennett is a Guardian. She has been charged with protecting the Goblet of Eternal Youth known as Desdemona's Temptation (Mona for short). She has been doing this for some two-hundred years. During that time she has had to remain celibate due to Guardian rules. She lives with her appointed successor who was transformed into a dragon when she was appointed. Just when Justine is belaboring the dullness of her life, someone makes a play for the goblet (now disguised as a cappuccino maker). Also interested in the Goblet is Dereck LaValle. The men in his family are cursed to always die at the same age. His time and that of his twin is fast approaching. He believes that killing the Guardian and drinking from the Goblet will end the curse. Add Satan, Justine's dead mother, Satan's son and the Guardians Council and you have quite a twisted tale.

This is a book about sex. Justine has been unable to have sex for two-hundred years. Her successor is a dragon addicted to cybersex. For most of the book, every woman immediately thinks about sex whenever she meets a man (sounds like a man's dreams come true). There is no talk of love or romance until the last few pages (apparently love is the offspring of quenched lust). I found the plot quite interesting and sufficiently convoluted but I have to wonder at Dereck. At one point he learns that killing the Guardian and drinking from the Goblet will not end the curse. Yet for the rest of the book he still feels driven to have to kill the Guardian. Why? I don't know. It is one of two questions I have for the author. All in all this is a fun book but not one for those offended by excessive sex (even between different species). I look forward to the sequel. Check it out.

2.0 out of 5 stars Amusing . . . kind of 4 May 2006
By loonigrrl - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Maybe the problem is that I didn't read this book without interruption. I was about half way into it when I decided to read another book I was desperate to get my hands on, and when I came back to this one I just couldn't find it as funny anymore. What had been rather amusing soon became absurd and tedious.

In Date Me Baby One More Time, you've got Derek, one of the curse La Valle men who needs to find the Guardian of the Goblet of Eternal Youth and kill her, and you've got Justine, the Guardian, who has to kill Derek or else end up in the Chamber of Unspeakable Horrors. Justine and Derek are pretty cute, but it's the other characters who quickly got on my nerves. There's the Guardian's successor who is trapped as a dragon, has cybersex all day and has a serious addiction to carb free pretzels. There's Satan, yes Satan, which may seem kind of cool, but trust me, is not. He's written for laughs which aren't funny and no one takes him seriously. Dialogue like: 'My love pumpkin! I sense your distress! I come to rescue you!' speaks for itself and it's never a good sign when even an ex lover says such things as "Satan! Down! Stay!" as if he was a dog. Even worse than Satan is Satan Jr, and yes it's as ridiculous as it sounds.

When the books is more focused on our hero and heroine it's pretty good, and worth reading. It's only toward the end that the secondary characters and the plot spin out of control. If you like your humor bordering on the absurd then Date Me Baby is for you. If not, then forget about this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun and inventive paranormal romance 19 Dec 2006
By Betti Mustang - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I really enjoyed this book. Justine and her friend Theresa (who has been turned into a camisole wearing dragon) are Guardians of the Goblet of Eternal Youth. The fun begins when a hottie named Derek needs to kill the Justine and drink from the goblet to break a generational curse on his family-- all the males die in funny freak accidents at the exact age of 31.

Derek and Justine are wild about eachother, and are torn up because to survive, they need to kill one another.

There is a great cast of eccentric characters, the plot is fun and layered, and the dialog is hilarious.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants a fun, wild and hilarious read. The trick is to remember to not take it so seriously-- it was meant to be ridiculous. Oh, and the sex is hot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Completely hilarious! 6 July 2006
By Amy Anderson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This book is so funny and sexy!! "Pretzel King" Derek is H-O-T and makes a perfect match with their romantic tension and bantering with the guardian of the goblet of youth (an espresso maker who doesn't say much but is certainly "perky" - pun intended) Justine. Justine's roommate a sex-kitten currently in the form of a dragon (who relieves her, ahem, "tensions" by an addiction to cyber sex) is a scream. Ms. Rowe has a crazy and fabulous imagination and I laughed out loud a lot while I read this book. She's an author to watch, that's for sure. A nice change from vampire novels and highly entertaining on every page!!
