Product Description

Product Description

The book explains all stages of database development, starting with a comprehensive database application systems development life cycle model, which clearly defines the areas of focus required for any new database developer. Database design using entity modelling and normalization are described in a clear and comprehensible manner. Covering inplementation in Access, SQL, Access forms, macros, modules and report writer, the text also addresses Visual Basic database programming using Data Control, DAO, ADO and Access modules. The second edition contains a new set of chapters on Active Server Pages with HTML and VBScript. The new material explains how to get your database onto the Internet and the benefits offered by web-based database applications. ASP is put into context with a discussion of web terminology and client and server side scripting in VBScript. Client-side scripting examples in Javascript are also included. HTML and ASP are given separate chapters, with an array of examples, screen shots and detailed code descriptions.

From the Author

The motivation for this second edition was the idea that the next logical step after showing how to design a database and process its data using SQL and Access and/or VB, is to show how to put the database and its processing onto the internet. ASP is a widely-used method of doing this. As you will notice from the updated Contents, Chapter 11 (the ADO programming chapter) has been extended, because ADO is the basis of ASP database programming. Chapters 13, 14 and 15 are new. Chapter 13 introduces the internet and web development techniques, options and terminology. Chapter 14 is a compact but pretty comprehensive coverage of HTML. HTML is the language of the web, just as SQL is the language of databases, and really needs to be known. This chapter, like all the other chapters, uses a separate example for each new concept. Chapter 15 covers ASP database programming, again using multiple examples, with every line in each program explained.

This book does cover design of a relational database very well and ERD's too. It goes onto macro's in reports and forms, although it would have been nice to have a CD with the database on to work with. It is quite difficult to imagine setting up reports an macros.
There is a lot of screen shots here, which is great if you are unsure. I suppose it is a beginners book.
I bought this book thinking it would introduce me to VBA within Access. There is none of this. It is all linking Access through VB, which is different. I had to buy the SYBEX developers book 1 to cover this and front end forms with functionalilty
