This is not just a tool for photographers, anybody who uses a computer to produce digital works should consider using one. I design and build websites and software, the colours I see on my screen are not neseceraly what can be seen on the end users, by using the Spyder to calibrate my monitor I can work in the knowledge that atleast what I see is what should be seen on another machine if it were also calibrated.
The elite version of the Spyder3 uses the same colorimeter as the Pro version but has an enhanced version of the softawre allowing mulitple monitors to be calibrated to the same target providing a consistant enviroment for a team. If you need more than just one machine to be calibrated then chose this version otherwise the pro (
Spyder 3 Pro (PC/Mac)) is just as good for a little less money.
The solution itself consists of some software and a usb colorimeter, the colorimeter is used to measure the output of the screen. The software then can create a custom colour profile for your display. The whole process can take between 10 and 30 minuites dependent upon your pc.
The colorimeter can be left plugged in sitting in a desktop cradle and will continually moniter the ambient light levels and provide an alert if you need to recalibrate your display.
Overall a very usefull addition for anybody working with digital images.
