5.0 out of 5 stars The three works Mahler never heard 2 Aug 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I have never really understood the way that Cooke's performing version of Mahler's 10 symphony is cold shouldered by so many otherwise sensitive conductors. Of course, Mahler never completed it, but left only a complete short score and some full scoring, but this could also be said of both Das Lied and 9, neither of which he heard in performance, which would probably have modified his own idea of the works (particularly the ninth). But of course this lack of completion cannot be the real reason, or otherwise those same conductors would also refrain from performing the first movement adagio of the tenth (in a mutilated version compared to the one that Cooke offers), but they all manage that without any qualms at all. I think that the real reason is more to do with their idea that Mahler's ninth is a great valedictory statement, his own Abschied. Well, he wrote another symphony afterwards, which makes a nonsense of that.
I personally think that the tenth is Mahler's greatest work (actually I think it is THE greatest piece of music ever written), but somehow I managed to miss the Sanderling performance, so it was for this I purchased this collection of Mahler's last three works. What I didn't expect was to also find one of the finest Das Lied I have ever heard and the FINEST ninth. Sanderling has the abillity to provide the endless ebb and flow of tempo variation that Mahler also did (hear Mahler himself on piano (look on amazon for Mahler plays Mahler and also the memories of New York Phil players on the same disc) which is also to be found in the performances of Vaclav Neumann and Rafael Kubelik.
The Ninth is NOT played in valedictory mode and is all the better for it.
