Product Description

Karl knows that, if he is to carry out orders to lead a bomb attack on the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, he will probably kill his English cousin. But he has no choice. After the war, and consumed with guilt, he returns to England. Did he kill Andrew?

From the Author

An unexpected spin-off from Dartmouth Conspiracy was a bagful of letters from readers. It proved to me that there are many out there who, like me, witnessed the true event that inspired me to write this story: the bombing of the Royal Naval College on 18th September 1942.

One of these letters was from an ex-RAF fighter pilot from 310(Czech) Squadron, now living in Norfolk, who sent me photos of Squadron Leader Dolezal and Flight lieutenant Kimlika who helped repulse German raiders over Dartmouth on that fateful morning.

Another letter came from the nephew of a Wren Petty Officer who was sadly killed in the raid but, thanks to my reader, I was able to show a photograph of her to my father aged 97, a fellow member of college staff at the time.

I have mentioned just two but there were many more letters; some sad, some amusing but all absolutely fascinating to read. I treasure them all and have thanked all their senders for such a delightful and unexpected reward.

James Stevenson

Dartmouth Conspiracy is a wonderfully writen book which held me captivated from the very first page. I am not usually a reader of war type books but having had it given to me as a present I thought I should "give it a go". I found that chores around the house were building up as I was so "into" this book that I could not put it down. I would not call it a "male" read. I hope that the author, James Stevenson, will write another book in the near future. I was feeling bereft once I had finished it.

Brilliant! 7 Mar 2012

This well written book is an excellent, exciting and thought provoking read - one I couldn't put down, yet didn't want to finish.
The author has cleverly produced a marvellous and engrossing WW2 believable story of intriguing mystery by skilfully weaving inspiration from witnessing the bombing raid on Dartmouth Royal Naval College when he was a child in 1942 together with factual accuracy after a lifetime of interest and continuing love for aircraft and their mechanics. The rich tapestry of this novel is further enriched by striking characterisation, action and dramatic tension and will appeal to not only to WW2 enthusiasts, but also those who enjoy a really good action/suspense/thriller - it would make a fantastic movie!

From the moment I opened this book I was thoroughly gripped. It weaves threads of historical reality with an extraordinary variation of characters and locations into a readable, thrilling and entertaining story. A Second World War German pilot leads an attack on the Royal Naval College Dartmouth, a bombing raid intended to kill 600 young cadets including his own English cousins with whom he swore a pact of friendship before the war. After the raid the reader is led through the harrowing and life-threatening tale of the young pilot's quest to find out if a message he sent over to warn his cousins had been found, thus saving their lives. As the story develops the reader is faced with unexpected twists. The pilot meets characters who are also bent on finding the truth behind this raid, some seek revenge, others wish to forget. The ending is a fitting and unexpected climax, which leaves the reader racing for the final explanation.

Mr Stevenson writes in a straightforward style. He takes us from England to Germany and Portugal. The novel combines all the elements of an entertaining read: violence - war and its aftermath; history - the author's war experience as a child; intrigue - the dubious life of a spy; humour - the spy-killer's cat, saved from licking up poisonous liquid on the carpet. James Stevenson has given us a book that keeps us on our toes as it shifts in time from pre-war to 2005.

Dartmouth Conspiracy is a delight to read. It's edge of the seat stuff. My first hope is that someone great will find it and turn into a film. My second hope is that James Stevenson will write many more historical thrillers like this one.
