From the new edition of this book you would be forgiven for thinking that it's all about evil rituals with unholy powers, but that is not quite the whole story, although Sarah, the protagonist for the first half of the book, believes so. The last descendant of a proud family who dominated the surrounding land and people for generations, she makes a desperate bargain to restore herself to her "rightful" inheritance, not quite understanding what she's doing until it's too late. The second half of the book takes up with two twins, and you wonder exactly what they have to do with Sarah. All is eventually revealed in a dramatic and satisfying ending.
There are many interesting themes in this story: the thin line between pride and arrogance; the science of alchemy, turning something bad into something good; the need to stand up for yourself and the eternal battle between good and evil, which touches everyone whether they know it or not. Catherine Fisher's writing is rhythmic, and she is good at picking out the small details which draw you in.
An interesting and absorbing book.

When Sarah was just a baby her grandfather lost ownership of the family estate in a game of cards. When in a moment of pride Sarah loses her position at the local school, it looks as if everything is lost. Then Sarah makes a dreadful bargain with Lord Azriel - one that threatens her eternal soul. Can Sarah make everything right again?
