This tells the story of two boys, Jonathan and Ricky, who get sucked into an alternative London, known as Darkside. Modern London sits alongside this Dickensian nightmare of a place where vampires and werewolves are part of the regular population, and bloody violence is an every day occurrence. Jonathan, the main character, has to find a way to understand what Darkside is doing to him and his mentally ill father. His journey is scary, exhilarating and totally page turning. The book is well written and cleverly thought out. Although this is a standalone story it is clear from the ending that this is the first book in a series. I would like to read the rest. We have this in our primary school library. I would recommend it for confident readers, probably only in year six, as the violence is quite graphic and the horror element of the book is quite strong.
