Product Description

Product Description
1286 and on a storm-ridden night King Alexander III of Scotland is riding across the Firth of Forth to meet his beautiful French bride Yolande. He never reaches his final destination as his horse mysteriously slips, sending them both crashing to their death on cruel rocks. The Scottish throne is left vacant of any real heir and immediately the great European princes and the powerful nobles of Alexander’s kingdom start fighting for the glittering prize. The Chancellor of England, Burnell, ever mindful of the interest his king, Edward I, has in Scotland, sends his faithful clerk, Hugh Corbett, to report on the chaotic situation at the Scottish court. Concerned that a connection exists between the king’s death and those now desirous of taking the Scottish throne, Corbett is drawn into a maelstrom of intrigue, conspiracy and danger.

About the Author
Paul Doherty was born in Middlesbrough. He studied History at Liverpool and Oxford Universities and obtained a doctorate for his thesis on Edward II and Queen Isabella. He is now headmaster of a school in north-east London and lives with his family in Essex.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sir Hugh Triumphs Again, 31 Jan 2005
By J. Chippindale (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
The book begins with Alexander III of Scotland riding out from Edinburgh Castle to be with his new bride who is waiting for him at Kinghorn Manor. It is a filthy stormy night and the following day the King is found below the cliff with his neck broken and his horse close by. It is assumed that the horse lost its footing and took them both over the cliff.

Hugh Corbett is sent to Scotland to find out whether it was truly an accident, or something far more sinister.

Corbett is drawn into the intrigues of the Scottish court and faces intrigue, suspicion and danger before a conclusion is reached.

Doherty is one of my favourite author's and he never lets the reader down.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Story Close to Home, 9 Jul 2009
By Mrs. Jean Seath (Kirkcaldy, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Because I was brought up only 3 miles from the scene of Alexander's fatal fall I really enjoyed this story of intrigue. You do not often find a story concerning the Kings of Scotland and England unless it concerns bloody battles but this story manages to avoid that.As a fan of Paul Doherty's Hugh Corbett and his companion Ranulff I can recommend this tale.If you have been to Edinburgh's Royal Mile you will recognise the places talked about and if you have ever been to Burntisland and Kinghorn you can see the monument to Alexander between the 2 villages.Enjoy it.
