Chaos is coming 12 Feb 2007
By T. R. Alexander TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book details the events of the recent worldwide Storm of Chaos Warhammer campaign and gives the in game perspective for the battles during that time. The book covers all the events and portents that preceded the campaign, the Conclave of Light, the rise of Valten and the climactic siege of Middenhiem. Darkness is written in the form of a journal of the historian Frederich "Old" Weirde and includes first hand accounts of events from his son Stefan. The book includes some good background information on Middenhiem and a small amount of info on the Empire as a whole during this period. Although Darkness Rising doesn't go into the detail of what happened during the Storm of Chaos the book does give you a good first person perspective of life in the Empire when under threat by the forces of Chaos.

Little need to big-up 25 Jan 2009
Format:Paperback
Darkness Rising - A complete history of the Storm of Chaos is pitched at anyone who is new to the Old World of Warhammer, successfully treading the fine line between lightweight and open-ended introduction on the one hand and detailed dramatis personae on the other. Veterans will feel well-informed and enjoy this book in that reading it is rather like taking a refresher course in all things Warhammer. This is also for fans who like their documents authentic, yet this is rarely a demanding or challenging book, at least untill the last couple of pages, when the two Scribes finally really came alive for me...
My only genuine niggle was that some of the italic script is printed very, very tiny, making lots of natural sun-light an essential companion to your reading.
4 Star.

The new standard 3 July 2005
By John T. Miller IV - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Darkness Rising: A complete history of the Storm of Chaos is the second art/background book produced by Games Workshop for its dark, gritty, and detailed Warhammer Fantasy setting and the new standard by which they will be measured. Darkness Rising covers the Storm of Chaos, the most horrific continent wide war that shook the nations and peoples of the Old World and beyond to their very core.

This is a beautiful book. Don't let the simple description of "paperback" fool you, this is a large book rather than a simple market novel one might obtain at the bookstore. The binding of this book is top notch and is composed of reinforced paper. The interior pages are a high quality gloss and beautifully designed. The artwork was created by a vast cast of spectacular artists who capture the mood of the Warhammer Fantasy setting and the trying times of the Storm of Chaos perfectly. Their images are at times subtle, playing second fiddle to the prominence of the text and at other points beautifully dynamic and spread across both pages in massive works that draw the eye to the minutest of details.

Darkness Rising: A complete history of the Storm of Chaos is written from the perspective of Frederich "Old" Weirde of Altdorf the capital city of the Empire. Old Fred is a self described noted scholar, professor of esoteric studies, historian, antiquarian, fellow of the Altdorf Men's Historical Society and connoisseur of the finest Estalian Port. It is from his eyes that we bear witness to some of the most dramatic events of the Storm of Chaos and thanks to the correspondence he receives from his son who is out in the fields we are given a profound impression of not just the events of this dark time but their effects on the populace and the nation as a whole.

A beautiful book for both collectors and enthusiasts alike, Darkness Rising will add detail to the imagination of any fan of the Warhammer Fantasy miniatures game, readers of the novels, or players of the recently released Warhammer Fantasy RPG. Particularly, the images contained within will allow people unfamiliar with the setting to, in a glance, be seduced by the dark grandeur of this immersive world. You will not be disappointed.

I love Storm of Chaos, the deep background of the story line, and how each main character fits in. I've been looking for a book wich describes how this Campaing unfolds. I hoped this book had all that, but not really, its the version of a Scholar wich tells the Storm of Chaos story from his point of View, but it lacks in so many ways, For example the Final battle between the everchosen and Valten, how valten falls injured and then suddly Grimgor Ironhide the Orc Warchief appear from nowhere and defeat the everchosen in battle! Then While the armies of Chaos are retreating they are attacked by legions of Undead commanded by a poweful Vampire lord!! I mean thats the climax of the story! and this book barely mention it!. such a let down
