Amazon.co.uk Review

In small towns, everyone thinks that they know everyone's secrets and good police work is a matter of perpetual minor nosiness and betrayals. When a young Downs Syndrome girl is found in the woods, Police Chief Nathan Storrow finds his investigations drawing him to conclusions he would rather not make; years later, his daughter Rachel, herself a police officer, investigates the kidnapping of Claire, teacher at the local school for the blind, and colleague to Rachel's brother Billy, and finds herself going down some of the same paths of suspicion. The emphasis here is as much on the investigators and the personal problems that stand in the way of their success as it is on the details of crime and punishment. There is a lot of legwork, endless talking to Claire's students and some clever misdirection as to the interpretation of clues, but Nathan and Rachel both in turn have to learn to see what is in front of them, as much as follow a trail. The novel is dominated by atmosphere--the woods adjoining the town are omnipresently gloomy. Nathan's past alcoholism, Rachel's affair with a married man, become obstacles; we never escape from our pasts, and the present is unforgiving. --Roz Kaveney --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

A great book 29 Nov 2000

Format:Paperback
This is the best thriller I've read in a long, long time. I would recommed it for the intelligent reader. It's not for your average mystery buff. It's darker and more complicated. Actually, at a very high level of prose. More toward Harris than Cornwell. I'm looking forward to what else Alice Blanchard has to offer the world.

A truly powerful first novel from Alice Blanchard. Grabs you from page one and won't let go. Heart-wrenching characters. The main character Rachel's emotions are intense - her devotion to her brother is complex and believable. She fights for truth even though it could hurt her father's memory and ruin her brother. This is a page-turner with the best of them. Can't wait for the next novel by this new, great writer.

'Darkness Peering' is not only a good suspense thriller, but a great one. Written with real mastery for a first time novelist. Alice Blanchard pulls off a tough balancing act between vivid, literary atmospheres, emotional characters and a terrific, skull-numbing plot. What a writer! This is so much more than a mere page-turner: it hit me in my gut and heart simultaneously. The ending is superb and genuinely frightening. A true literary thriller is very rare, but Blanchard has done it. Darkness Peering, I predict, will be appreciated more and more over time and realized to be a classic.
