Book Description

24 April 2006 Frank Elder (Book 3)

She wore a gold dress, short-sleeved, its skirt full-length and slightly flared. He could see the faint indentation on her left hand, a pale circle of skin giving away the fact that, until recently, a wedding ring had been there. She looked peaceful, lying there on the bed, her arms resting easily together, the left hand on the right, a slender silver cross and chain encircling her neck, and not a wrinkle, not a fold of her dress out of place. And, perhaps, she truly was at peace. For she was dead.

This was the sight that greeted Detective Inspector Frank Elder on his first case with the Serious Crimes Unit. His first case and never solved; no one was ever charged; the murderer never found. At liberty to walk the streets, and to kill again.

Eight years later, Elder's estranged wife contacts him in his Cornish hideaway. Her friend's sister Claire - a quiet and withdrawn widow in her fifties - has mysteriously disappeared. Elder, reluctantly, agrees to dig around and see what he can find. Then Claire is found, dead, arranged with meticulous detail on her bed, and it doesn't take long for Elder to make the connection. It's obviously the work of the same unbalanced individual and, to find the killer, Elder must shine a light into the darkest recesses of human behaviour, the dark and twisted recesses of a disturbed human mind...

By M. V. Clarke VINE™ VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback
John Harvey's Frank Elder trilogy is simply brilliant - vivid characters, dark, complex plots, superb dialogue and a real sense of the physical surroundings of each story. Here, Elder's back in Nottingham, his former stamping ground, at the request of his ex-wife, to look into the disappearance of her friend's sister. Her body is soon discovered, laid out in a remarkably neat and ordered manner, which reminds Elder of his very first case in Nottingham. He quickly becomes a civilian consultant to the police investigation. There are links with Elder's first, unsolved, murder case in Nottingham, with occasional flash-back chapters to this time (1997), as well as flash-backs to some events in the 1960s, the significance of which becomes apparent in the second half of the novel. Here we have Elder and colleagues attempting to deal with a highly-planned murder, with several suspects, alongside which, Elder's continuingly difficult relationship with his daughter and ex-wife add a richness to the plot, as does the greater insight we finally get into DI Prior's background. All in all, a great read, but read the earlier novels in the trilogy first. I'm now looking forward to exploring Harvey's long series featuring Charlie Resnick.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly skilled and accomplished writing 27 May 2006
Format:Hardcover
Like the last reviewer I am a huge John Harvey fan. I've read all his Resnick books and the new Frank Elder series is superb. The characters are skillfully and lovingly created, Frank Elder himself has a calm dignity and intelligence which makes him much to be admired. That said, the actual plots of Harveys books are extremely gripping. In the case of Darkness & Light we are slowly made aware that the quiet middle-aged divorcee who goes missing has actually had something of a double life and when she is found murdered the book literally becomes unputdownable. Harveys books have that magical quality of really getting under your skin. If you're looking for an exciting, original and extremely well written book then buy this and then be prepared to buy everything else he's ever written!

5.0 out of 5 stars Harvey: Darkness and Light 6 Jan 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Well up to the standard we've come to expect from Harvey. Some Harvey fans, I realise, don't like Elder (the detective hero), but I do. Elder is a character of greater depth and complexity than some others Harvey has created. Let's have more featuring this detective!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is for the screen 12 Mar 2007
By C Elyod
Format:Mass Market Paperback
All reviewers have liked this book so I wont go on about it. I have only just discovered John Harvey. With so much rubbish on TV this gem of a book should be adapted for the screen. The novel was gripping and the story believable. This is a must read.

1.0 out of 5 stars out of date 26 Jan 2013

am i the only person to find Harvey so dreary ? i thought the pc plod procedural had been laid to rest. In this book here it is alive and kicking . t he culprit is easily spotted amid the parade of suspects . There is a little twist at the end but not in any sense riveting : a skilled crime writer could have turned the plot upside down at this moment and left you gasping . i dont worry about the use of the f word- rare on my count . i do worry that the writer gets by on a motivation based on , surprise, the Oedipal complex

5.0 out of 5 stars Nottingham in the Spot Light 15 Jun 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Another thrilling Frank Elder novel from the UK's master of crime. Set in and around the Nottingham area it all adds up to an extra dimension to the reading experience as the places referred to in the book really do exist. This book is one of a series of 3 Elder stories all expertly written, keeping readers in suspense and entertained through out. John Harvey is a must for people who enjoy crime thrillers.

5.0 out of 5 stars By far the best John Harvey to date 21 Feb 2006
Format:Hardcover
I am a HUGE fan of John Harvey and as far as I'm concerned, he just gets better and better. However, this one has excelled all my expectations. The plot, the dialogue and the atmosphere are quite superb. As for the last sentence, well it just beggars belief! He's the by far the best crime writer in Britain. Well done, John - may you go from strength to strengh.
