This is a fantastic debut novel. I didn't want to put it down; the plot was gripping and fast-paced. The characters were fascinating, and I couldn't wait to find out the truth about the sinister world Sophie finds herself in, and the answer to all the riddles she encounters...as well as whether she would ever find her way safely home. There was plenty of suspense along the way, and unexpected twists and turns. Fantasy isn't a genre I read very often, but this had me hooked; I would love to read more by this author!

I have to say that I started this book with a little uncertainty, having read Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials a few years ago, I thought that portals and parallel worlds might be a bit trite; how wrong I was! This was a refreshing and thoroughly enjoyable read! Any similarity with Pullman ends with the most basic conceit mentioned above. Its contemporary roots make it easily accessible and add to the sense of realism and threat. As a 39 year old male, I assume I'm not the target audience, but for a holiday read I found it a great bit of escapism. Without wanting to give away too much, a switch of focus mid way to another character and other twists kept me engrossed to the end. Finally, the rich and fantastical imagery made me think that this would make a great screenplay. Thoroughly recommended!

Unlike many of the reviewers above, I am a regular reader of fantasy and I thought this was excellent. The world in which Sophie finds herself has a shifting dreamlike quality, and her disorientation in it is very convincing. More so, I felt, than say Thomas Covenant's initial response to the Land. The continued interplay between Darklands and the ordinary world is novel and gave the story a depth that is often lacking, and the sense of menace is perfectly executed. The threat to Sophie and her friends feels more immediate and real than that in many fantasies by much more established authors.
The plot races along and I was gripped by the mystery and the way the story plays out, gradually revealing, in unexpected twists and turns, the shared histories of the characters.
