Book Description

Lies: we all tell them.

To protect those we love, to disguise failure, to hide disappointment. To mask betrayal, or deceit. But what happens when those lies start to catch up with us? When our lives begin to be shaped by the lies of others?

The late 'noughties'. A global recession looms. A group of old friends, all leading outwardly successful, interesting lives. All in apparently loving, secure relationships. Yet all, in some way, lying to those closest to them, concealing secret worries, jealousies, desires. This group of friends is about to discover that the truth won't stay buried for ever...

Welcome to the darker side of love.

This is great late night read full of outwardly respectable and ostensibly happy people. However, scratch the surface and you open a can of worms. The issues are contemporary and topical and I found them easy to identify with being in a similar situation as a married mother of young children worried about the recession.

However, some minor irritations here with a smattering of upper middle pretensions. Maybe it's just me but there's so many Waitrose name checks I thought Ruston had a sponsorship deal. Oh and who on earth would call their son "Viking"? Izzy's husband telling her the white truffle risotto she made him was wonderful made me wince a bit too.

I imagine this as mini series starring Sarah Parrish or some such and I imagine the poor me posh girls in it would grate. However, maybe I am guilty of reverse snobbery, I don't know.

I did like it though, and loved how many secrets were buzzing around, from James' secret money transfers to the "Why won't he marry me?" dilemma. I devoured it whilst partaking of some Waitrose Ciabatta with Balsamic Vinegar and Virgin Olive Oil.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Darker Side of Love - A Hit 15 Mar 2012
By Alessi Lover TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
A close collection of friends, but whose secret or lies are by far the worst?

The blurb made it sound an enticing read for me ....... Whose lie or secret would outwit the other?

I did enjoy this book, an easy read of what could be happening to a few people that were friends in the noughties and maybe still so now. You do think what would be the biggest secret ....not telling. Just that I did read it in just a matter of days as it just flowed really easily.

Worth a read and also worth the time take to read it.

A great mini series could be made from this, as it has the basic characters but most holding something g back that may or may not show them in another light.

By Brett H TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This novel traces the lives of four female friends and the men in their lives over a period of two years or so. All begins happily - on the lighter side of love as it were - with one woman realising her long standing ambition to get married. The first few chapters continue in this vein and the reader is lulled into a false expectation of a rosy future for these golden couples.

However, there are a few hints that all is not going as well as they might have hoped with one friend unnerved as never before by her husband's latest affair and another failing to conceive a much longed for baby. Eventually each relationship is affected and lives begin to unravel as the each discovers that deception can eat at the heart of even the most secure of relationships.

The author draws her characters carefully, and whilst manipulating ten or more at the same time, manages to define them all clearly as individuals whom the reader grows familiar with and begins to empathise with. This is skilfully done as each have feet of clay and at the end of the day there are really few if any truly blameless characters within these pages.

Each of the characters' stories is different, but intertwined so there is much to keep one's interest alive within the storyline. However, it is the characterisation where Jessica Rushton excels in this tale. This is what keeps you avidly reading, willing each character to come through the darker side and out the other side in one piece. The next book by this author will certainly be high on my reading list.

This book grips you from the start. It tells of friendship ,love.lies and deceipt. How a friendship quickly turns into love ,but how along the way the web of deceipt creeps in . Friends who have known each other for a very long time, start to find out , that maybe they just didn`t know as much as they thought they did about each other.A very good read.

4.0 out of 5 stars suprisingly good read 11 July 2012
By Ms. L. Walters VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I was enticed by the lusciousness of the title 'The Darker Side of Love' it promised me depth and angles to an addictive story-line whilst making wistful all at the same time. I was not disappointed. I won't give the story away, after all the secrets are the characters secrets to tell not mine but I really did enjoy this book. It might be the greatest book ever written but if they ever make it into a TV program you can bet you life people will be falling over themselves to buy the book.

The only downside was the, in my opinion constant, reference to upperclass/uppermiddle class. These were a bit too frequent but I accept that this quite likely just my own preference. Sometimes we the audience don't need reminding of the social status of a character once this has been established. But definatly a book I'll be lending to many friends in turn.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read 12 May 2012

Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I found this very interesting.

I didnt find it as dark as the title suggested, in fact i found it quite fluffy in places.

I had never read anythign by this author before so i dont really have any other works to compare it too, but this was ok. Certainly not a book i would keep on my bookshelf tho, more like one i would pop along to my local charity shop, or put on the shared bookshelf at work.
