Twelve years ago, a family reunion ended in tragedy. Now the Cameron family have mett up to spend the new year together and attempt to put the past behind them, but some ghosts just won't be laid to rest. This is a story of intrigue and betrayal. Fabulous ensemble cast and a gripping mystery 2 Dec 2011
By Molly R. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I'm not usually all that interested in stories billed as murder mysteries, so it's worth mentioning that while this book does contain a mystery revolving around a death, it is so much more than the usual formulaic "whodunit." Jessica Chambers excels at the ensemble cast, and this novel shines for it. She writes a family full of characters of all ages and temperaments, each hiding their own secrets and desires, all fully believable even when they clash with each other in destructive fashion. And the clashing sure does get destructive! I was gripped by both the sympathy for their sufferings and misunderstandings, and the burning need to find out what exactly happened on that tragic day that damaged the family so thoroughly. Intricately plotted, and written with a gorgeous sense of romance and setting, this book is a sure bet for those of us who grew up on darkly romantic stories like 'Rebecca'.
Drama, suspense, mystery and romance. 1 May 2012
By SanDor - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Drama, suspense, mystery and romance. Miss Jessica Chambers' second novel, "Dark is the Sky" is surely one of the best written books I've read lately. The story captivated me from the very beginning. I felt myself pulled in, meeting one member of the family after the other and one more interesting and believable character after the other. And as I know from the author's debut novel, "Voices on the Waves" she is a master of portraying characters. Dark secrets push the veil to come out in the open, intrigue and whispers simmer dangerously. Here and there, a short, caustic remark or an evoking silence stays ready to start an emotional hurricane, as the family gathers together 12 years after the mysterious death of Scott. "Dark is the Sky" reminded me of Agatha Christie's novels. I am impressed, and I will surely remember this book for a very long time...
Dark is the Sky 13 April 2012
By Kathleen Kelly - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
"The cemetery was deserted. Oblivious to the December chill seeping through her jacket, the woman sat at the graveside and watched the sky darken over London."
This first sentence in the prologue certainly had me hooked and I knew I had to find out who this woman was.
Violet, who wants to lay the past to rest after 12 years, asks her sister, Olivia to help her get all the family together. They had been present years ago at a gathering and have not been together since. Olivia is quite reluctant to rehash the bad memories as is the rest of the family but they do decide to go to the gathering held at Olivia and Joel's house. The Cameron brothers have always been close until a horrible tragedy and misunderstandings split them apart. The youngest of Joel and Olivia's children has repressed memories of the event that keeps coming back to her in dreams. No one will talk about what happened to her Uncle Scott and now that she is 17 she has questions she needs answers to. Will the family be able to come to terms with the past and move on? All I can say is this book is remarkable in that it lays the lives and emotions of a dysfunctional family out there for all to see. I think the author did a wonderful job telling this story with compassion and honesty. A riveting novel that will have you turning the pages just to see what happens next. I loved it and highly recommend it.
