Product Description

Juan Cabrillo and his motley crew aboard the clandestine spy ship Oregon have made a very comfortable and very dangerous living from working for high-powered Western interests. But their newest clients have come from the east-the Far East-to ask for Cabrillo's special brand of assistance.

They are a consortium of Japanese shipping magnates, and their fortunes are being threatened by brutal pirates trawling the waters of Southeast Asia. Normally, such attacks on the high seas are limited to smaller ships and foreign-owned yachts-easy targets on the open ocean. Now, however, giant commercial freighters are disappearing. Cabrillo suspects that the pirates have joined forces to take down the bigger ships. But when the Oregon confronts the enemy, he learns that the pirates' predations hide a deadly international conspiracy-a scheme of death and slavery that Juan Cabrillo is going to blow out of the water...

This is Jack Du Brul's first teaming with Clive Cussler, and it's an astonishing debut pairing. I wasn't vastly impressed or excited before by the Oregon files novels, although they had charming and diverse characters and a fascinating central base. However with this pairing, the characters, the Oregon itself and the story have all taken wings, and soar. The pirate raids upon shipping are dangerous and exciting, and when Cabrillo and his crew of wonderfully different characters (at their charismatic best) take them on the book erupts into exciting firefights and high drama. With a darker, edgier slavery sub-plot than expected, this could have unbalanced the story. Instead it adds a dark dramatic edge to the derring do and adventure, and as Cabrillo and co race against time to stop the vicious bad guys it helps to fuel many truly exciting scenes.
The extra edge of danger and determination Du Brul's input seems to have added (when compared to the previous pairing of Cussler and Craig Dirgo for Golden Buddha) made this one of the most exciting Cussler novels in ages for me. Barnstormingly tense, dramatically written and flavoured with blistering action, it really hit the spot in the best possible way.
A must-have without any doubt.

excellant book, unable to put down, and the story really flowed. The follow up book Skeleton coast carried straight with the action, recommended.

The story cuts back and forth in the great Cussler tradition, bringing various scenarios to a gripping conclusion. A real modern pirate story, fantastic.

I loved this book, the story is quite plausable in these cash strapped times!
Its action all the way without too many shifts in the narrative.
If you like Cussler you'll love this!
