5.0 out of 5 stars Revelatory and utterly gripping, 4 Jan 2001
This is a remarkable book. The story of the rise of fascism and Stalinism and the great depression might seem worn-out by now, yet Brendon manages to re-tell it in a way that not only makes one realise how much one didn't know but produces from the material an unputdownable international thriller peopled by fascinating (and awful or inspiring) characters.

The writing is of the first order. Brendon is particularly good at the choice (and often very witty) quotation to reveal the truth behind even minor figures.

This is not merely history bought to life -- it is how the times must have been lived.
