'Rich in human emotion and drama, delicately and delightfully written' New Worlds

Product Description

The survivors live deep underground, as far from the Original World as possible. It's true that some of the hot springs that sustain life are failing, and they are plagued by the huge and vicious soubats, and subject to sudden raids from other tribes. But they are safe from the Twin Devils, Strontium and Cobalt, and protected from the ultimate evil, Radiation. Then something strange and frightening starts to happen: terrible monsters, who bring with them a screaming silence, are seen and people are disappearing. One young man knows that to find out what's going on he must question the orthodoxies of his faith and defy the law. He must discover the nature of Darkness itself...

5.0 out of 5 stars A different twist on a recognised theme, 9 Sep 2001
This review is from: Dark Universe (Gollancz SF collectors' editions) (Paperback)
There are a lot of books which deal with the aftermath of a nuclear conflict. This offers a very original approach. Ancestors of the survivors have been living underground and their light source has failed. They have had to develop their hearing skills to cope with their sight deprivation. A fascinating study of what the world would be like. I am a blind person and I often thought that I "saw" the world like a sighted person in the dark, but this isn't actually true. There has been a lot of experimenation looking at how people perceive the world, and I just imagine the world differently. I have found that I can make more of my other senses because I have to. Can you tell what make a car is from the sound of the engine? I can. This writer captures the difference. I believe him. Added to this he tells a good story along the lines of " I want to know what happens next". The work is a lovely construct, well written and captivating. If you want to experience a different world - read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a good as I remembered, 3 Sep 2001
This review is from: Dark Universe (Gollancz SF collectors' editions) (Paperback)
I first read this book when I was a teenager and found if fascinating. The survivors of a nuclear holocaust are living in an underground shelter where the lighting has failed. They have developed a religion which explains what light is, and look forward to the day of the reunion. In the meantime they have adapted to the dark and navigate by the use of "clickstones" which provide them with a sort of sonar. Otherwise they have no idea what is happening to them. I was very struck by their first experiences of light which is described as a silent sound. Thirty years later I have bought this book and read it to my husband - who is blind. What will he think of the idea of trying to explain what light is to someone who has never seen it? Is it really that good? I asked him. "Yes" he said. "What shall I read to you now we have finished I? I asked. "Let's read that one again - I want to be sure that I haven't missed anything," he said. I recommend it heartily. It really is that good.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good sci fi read., 24 Nov 2008
By
This is an intersting book from a number of perspectives. The main two are the unravelling of a catestrophic nuclear aftermath and dealing with a life and culture of blindness only to suddenly be sprung into the world of the sighted and into a world of reconstruction and peace. I very much enjoyed this book. I was rather annoyed to have lost my copy and have had to purchase another - at some cost as it is out of print.
