4.0 out of 5 stars A trip to the dark side... 11 Feb 2014

This collection is pretty good with some nice darkly written stories. The first one "Highway 109" takes a late night prank to another level. I did guess the ending/twist as I imagine anyone would, but the story worked nevertheless. Next up "The Chamber" this one keeps you guessing and I liked the plot. It seemed more like an introduction to a full book, which if it was written I would be interested to take a look at. Next was my favourite story by far "Tower Of Obsession" this one gives a whole new perspective from those who share our space, it's clever, cute, and should put a smile on your face. Lastly "Darkfire" is an ok story but I didn't really get into it as much as the other stories. On the whole, I'm sure most readers looking for something on the dark side will find it here at some point.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well Written, Though Should Not Be $2.99 28 Jan 2012
By Joshua D. Hall - Published on Amazon.com
I don't typically read horror stories, though I will admit, I was somewhat impressed with Holland's "Dark Trails". This collection of short stories is composed of: "Highway 109", "Chamber", "Tower of Obsession", and "Darkfire", plus a poem at the end, "Dark in the Time."

"Chamber" and "Darkfire" were my favorites in this collection, though I felt that both, especially "Chamber", could do very well as longer stories, possibly even of novel length. Other stories, like "Tower of Obsession", I just was not able to get into. That, however, is just one of the troubles of short stories - you only have a limited time to draw the reader in.

That said, Holland's stories are very well written, and there were no glaring errors of note. It is very obvious that Holland is an experienced writer, and overall I was very impressed.

However, this collection should not be $2.99. I'm not sure if that's appropriate to say here, though with so many shorts on Amazon priced at 99 cents, it's difficult to see a collection of shorts selling for triple that price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty cool stories. 14 Mar 2012
By Alli Kat - Published on Amazon.com
I especially liked "Highway 109." Scary and tragic...just the way I like my fiction. I've made a lot of those long, late-night drives, and the thought of being stalked by a psycho is always in the back of my mind.
I didn't see any glaring editing problems with any of the stories.
But I did think the cover looked like it said "Dark Trans" in the thumbnail.

5.0 out of 5 stars swift action and unsettling scenes! 24 Jan 2012
By learning_to_learn - Published on Amazon.com
Normally I'm not a reader of horror stories, but this collection of short fiction pieces quickly drew me in. In a rather compressed manner the author riffs on various themes from both science fiction, fantasy and mystery genres. Remarkably, he does it all with a keen eye for movement and action so that this short volume makes both for an easy and very visual reading experience, conjuring up heart-stopping images almost effortlessly.

Each story is complete in itself. Well written and original. I recommend this one. The short story format lends itself to breaks and lunchtime reading.
