Being a PGCE student, a mum and a huge fan of picture books, I am always on the look-out for stories that children (and adults) enjoy. A Dark, Dark Tale is fantastic, especially in the large format that I have. Its appeal lies in the simple text enhanced by stunning artwork. Each page can be explored and examined in great depth. It is a mysterious story, full of atmosphere, open to interpretation and discussion. The language is simple and repetetive and young children will become confident in joining in even if they can't yet read.
A black cat is exploring a strange castle-like house which appears to be empty, but there are ornaments, paintings, items of furniture and toys. The reader is drawn into the house. Who lives/lived there? We don't know. At the end a mouse (in a very appealing little house in a box) lies in bed, startled by his home being opened. It is an unexpected ending that young children love and my own daughter has read it to herself numerous times now and savours every word and picture. The book stays with you after you have read it, it is powerful and intriguing. I recommend this book whole-heartedly to young readers (and older ones) and anyone who loves chidren's books.
