The book does repeat some of what was published in Devil's Knot but in this complex case it's inevitable and means that someone completely new to The West Memphis Three can understand this book if this is the first that they read.
Jason Baldwin is an inspirational person and I look forward to reading the autobiography he is hoping to release by the end of the year.
I will also purchase the final installment of this trilogy when it is available.

Being familiar with this case I couldn't wait to start. Found myself skipping repetitive pages. The story is interesting the book isn't. Save your money and look on the net

From Sgt. Melcher 4 Jun 2014
By Anthony R Melcher - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I personally know Jason and was around him for several years. Although I had to refer to Jason by his last name. The time I spent getting to know Jason I knew without a doubt He as well as Ecols and Miskelly were innocent. The news and public at that time accused them of the guilty ones.I look foward to the book.Jason has set forth a goal and
is accomplishing that goal.

Such humanity and heart, during such a dark time 25 Jun 2014
By Zoey Jordan - Published on Amazon.com

Having followed the case for several years, I'd read "Devil's Knot" (amazing case analysis!), seen the documentaries and recently watched the movie "Devil's Knot." Mara has done an amazing job with Dark Spell... highlighting not only the experiences of Jason Baldwin, but his huge heart, faith, and unstoppable spirit and inner strength. He's truly an amazing human, and many times in reading the book my heart was touched by his resolve and wisdom, in the midst of total chaos. Mara brings Jason's story to life; I don't know that his story has been shared so openly or eloquently before. While some aspects of the trial are covered, I never felt like it was a repeat of Mara's other book on the case, "Devil's Knot." I honestly felt connected to Jason as I was reading this -- and it was difficult to put down. I look forward to the next book in the trilogy. Highly recommend!!

An uncomfortable but gripping journey into the real-world effect of the WM3 case on an extraordinary human being 13 Jun 2014
By D. Davis - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I'm a long-time supporter and have probably read everything written on the case.

Dark Spell is an intimate exploration into Jason's world and the evil that befell him at the hands of a powerful State looking to quell public panic by sacrificing three kids they knew or should have known were innocent. For those of us who have followed this matter for years, expect an uncomfortable outrage when reading it. Not because Jason and Mara demand it, but quite the opposite - because one comes to know Jason, the quietest of the WM3, as few have.

It's not a comfortable read when one considers that the system that did this to him hums along - and has never paid for the wrong visited on Damien, Jason and Jessie (nor has it found justice for Michael, Steve, or Chris) - but it's well worth it. Most highly recommend!

Tear jerking true story 3 Nov 2014
By Yvonne L. Dial - Published on Amazon.com

I can only imagine the pain and heartache caused by the injustices heaped upon these three men. But this book really shows what horrible consequences the injustice brought upon Jason. I cried many times reading this and Damien's book. If it's a crime to wear black and listening to rock n roll then I will be imprisoned too....any day now. Jason, your story has definitely touched my heart. Mara, thank u for continuing to report the truth and for being big enough to admit any mistakes along the way, which were very few and for not being too proud to admit them . Very much worth the cost n time to read.

Great book!! 17 Jun 2014
By Christine Smith - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
This book is not like all the others I have read. Mara and Jason go into detail about Jason's journey. It was nice to finally read something that wasn't full of all the legal mubojumbo. Reading how hard Jason fought in his early days in prison really broke my heart. I was surprised to see my husbands name (Clayton "Smitty" Smith) mentioned in the book. Him and Jason made a lifelong friendship and I'm glad they were both there when they needed each other the most.
