Supernatural horror in which a suburban family are terrified by mysterious spirits. Like many loving parents, Lacy and Daniel Barrett (Keri Russell and Josh Hamilton) have retreated to quiet suburban streets to raise their children. They are more or less content until a series of strange occurrences at night unsettle them. Their son Jesse (Dakota Goyo) is particularly disturbed by events which include a confluence of migrating birds smashing into the house. With the police and other authority figures apparently unable to help, Lacy and Daniel are gradually drawn to a supernatural interpretation of events. Unfortunately, as an expert on the paranormal (J.K. Simmons) informs them, there may not be much they can do to resist the spirits. Even worse, when Lacy and Daniel begin to feel themselves losing control of their own actions, it raises the possibility that the spirits aren't merely within the house; they may be within them...

The great thing about this movie is that nothing really huge happens, until the end, yet it really unsettles you, because of its slow and progressively dark pace and because of its style, which makes you feel and live not just the surface of the events, but also the feelings of the characters.
It's like they took Paranormal activity, with its exhausting expectations for something that can happen anytime but does not until the end, and made it less amateurish and more cinematographic, resulting in something stronger and deeper because it seems to be less merely observational.
So basically it's a good movie, yet it could have been a masterpiece if it didn't reveal what it's about (aliens) at least for the first half (it would have been "funny" if it kept the mystery behind those extraordinary facts making you guess if it was about ghost instead of aliens, at least for a while).

If you're looking to be dazzled by special effects or plot twists you've never experienced before then keep looking; however if you're up for an entertaining and creepy suspense movie which will keep your eyes glued to the screen then this should satisfy. It reminds me most of Signs (M Night Shamalan) but personally i enjoyed this more. What it might lack in innovation it makes up for with slick cinematography, solid acting (even from the very young members of the cast), credible dialogue and very engaging plot development. I appreciate the fact that the makers chose to avoid some of the jaded Hollywood conventions. Probably not a movie you would watch over and over; this film is not so great you'd relive the moments already aware of the outcome, however if you like thrillers, suspense, the occasional shock and creepy movies about aliens then this is a great rental.

This is an intriguing SF film which has a distinct pervasive malevolent tone running throughout and appears to be the antithesis of Richard Dreyfus's third kind close encounter with the compassionate aliens in Steven Spielberg's classic movie. The climax of that film shows humans who have been abducted being returned to earth while a number of willing specimens hold hands with their other-worldly acquaintances and consensually enter their impressive spaceship. Dark Skies is a film which explores what might happen to a family living in suburban America who have been targeted by such alien beings and are not that enamoured about experiencing a close alien encounter of any kind, let alone a third kind. The presence of J K Simmons gives the movie a creditable gravitas as we experience a family being gradually torn apart and unable to comprehend what is happening to them. The reveal comes early but definitely does not detract from the quality of the movie as it advances towards its resolution.

The fact that i already knew from reading some other reviews here that this film was more science fiction based than super-natural did put me off a tad initially, but after watching this i gotta admit i found myself on edge throughout and not alot of films scare me, or chill me but this one did.....the story is surprisingly plausible and unfolds at just the right pace to capture and keep attention and you find yourself really caring for the main characters of the film.....the ending obviously leaves the doors open for a follow up film so don't expect a foregone conclusion or happy ending.....but do expect a good 93 mins of gripping, edge of your seat entertainment.

Loved this film, this is a great sci-fi which is based on a family that's experiencing a series of disturbing phenomena, for me this film was so spooky and truly terrifying in parts, there was some on the edge of your seat scenes which were so gripping, especially when the family who are trying to protect their son from a alien abduction. This is a brilliant film and hopefully a sequel in the making.

The story opens showing us a stereotypical suburban neighborhood. The focus shifts to one family. Daniel (Josh Hamilton) is out of work. He can't pay the mortgage but has money for all kinds of video equipment. His wife Lacy (Keri Russell) is a real estate salesperson, and perhaps too honest for her own good. They have two sons, Jesse (Dakota Goyo) who is discovering girls and pot and young Sammy (Kadan Rockett).

The story builds slow, creating character as it goes along, with each incident becoming more puzzling and troubling. Sammy reports of seeing the Sandman, claiming he is responsible for the odd occurrences. About an hour into the film, the events are explained in case you didn't figure it out by the opening Arthur C. Clarke quote.

This film is well done. I enjoyed it. This is must see for those who believe in the Grays. I would rate it somewhere in between rent to own.

Parental Guide: No f-bombs, sex, or nudity. Teen/tween drug use. Minor groping. Some sex talk, i.e. "going downtown"

Creepy movie about a family who become the target of extraterrestrial activity. This film has lots of creepy moments and builds up into a climatic and frightening ending with a slight twist. Well worth watching if you like this type of film. 5 stars from me.

I'm a huge fan of horros, but nothing really gets me too frightened - until you bring aliens in it then I become a whimpering mess. I was terrified and by the end cowering in fear
