5.0 out of 5 stars This is the better Dark Skies DVD package 20 Feb 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase
If you are planning to buy Dark Skies on DVD then this is the better package. OK, for the UK you will need a region-free player and an NTSC capable TV, but this box set scores over Medium Rare's Region 2 version in three important aspects - more content, better technical quality and much better extras.

You'll see a review from me for the Medium Rare (MR) PAL version, which I bought first. In that I commented that the pilot episode differs from that shown on UK's Channel 4 television back in the nineties. Well, in this package, BOTH versions of the pilot are included, with The Awakening (with re-shot scenes for the USA transmission)) in its rightful place as the first episode on DVD1. The early pilot version of The Awakening is on DVD 6 and there are detailed explanations from the producer/writers Bryce Zabel and Bruce Friedman as to why all the re-shoots had to take place.

The picture quality of this NTSC version is much better. The MR is presumably a conversion from NTSC video to PAL and is noticeably less crisp. There is some excellent acting in this series, and the fine detail of facial expression needs the best definition available. On a practical note, the actual packaging of these six DVDs is better (three slimline duals in a card case) rather than MR's clumsy 5-DVD plastic box with its poor retainers that allow the end disks to slip out.

With the 19 episodes spread over DVDs 1 to 5, the whole of DVD6 is used for extras. There's the early pilot (called here the 'International Pilot'), a fascinating interview feature with the producers and stars Eric Close and Megan Ward, a tongue -in-cheek Glossary, the original sales presentation, some network promos and the proposal for series 2 (which, alas, was never made).

5.0 out of 5 stars So many good memories. 22 Nov 2012

Love this series. Fantastic soundtrack too. I understand this is the version to have, as it has both versions of the first episode. I actually managed to make it through the extra features without wishing to die, for once. My wife, who had never heard of this also loved it. How the heck did this die while The X-Files lumbered on?

I would like to point out to anyone wanting to purchase this item that even though it says region 1 it is in fact region free so will play on any dvd player it works fine in my xbox360 & ps3 . I loved this series when it first came out & think the transfer is pretty good & looks very good on my 40" lcd , some people have said the sound is not very good but must admit that running through my surround sound system i have not had any problems & can hear everthing that is said clearly. So my advice is dont buy the uk release buy this us import instead . Hope this helps anyone intrested in buying this great series

5.0 out of 5 stars A Dark Take On The History Of The '60's 19 Feb 2013

I have watched this series many times since its first airing on UK TV in 1997. The series as always looks good and is acted superbly by the cast - I cant think of a better choice for the casting - the directors did a fantastic job here.
The plot twists all the salient points of recent 20th century history (and UFO history) from the late 40's to the late 60's into a secret government conspiracy against a hostile alien agenda . Personally I love this stuff and from the perspective of adding the major events that shaped 60's America it just adds to the intelligence of the whole series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark Skies DVD's 23 Aug 2011
By Paul
Ordered the US DVD set because it was mentionned in the review quality is better than the UK edition and that it would play on any DVD player because it is region free.
Well, it isn't. It is region 1 and doesn't work on my DVD (panasonic DMC-EH69)which is region 2.
I need to buy a region free DVD player now.

Best regards,

Paul

2.0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Ronnie 15 May 2012
DID THE ILLUMINATI PRESSURE NBC TO CANCEL THIS SHOW?

Kidding!

I admit that I didn't like "Dark Skies". But then, I watched it when "The X-Files" were going down the drain, too. The plot is too convoluted, and almost too conspiracist. And yes, it picks on Carl Sagan.

I can understand why a certain kind of conspiracy buffs may like this series, which was cancelled after only one season, but personally I just found it boring. The same UFO-government conspiracy concept played out all over again.

Why do you think urban legends become late night entertainment, while the REAL conspiracies of the U.S. government (or any other government, for that matter) are dropped down the memory hole? Well...?

I almost think it's a conspiracy!

Or perhaps the more down-to-earth conspiracies (the plot is set during the Cold War) aren't entertaining enough...

I mean, who cares about Ronald Reagan supporting Osama bin-Laden and Pol Pot, or sending hard cash to ayatollah Khomeini, when we can all worry about Carl Sagan's connections to alien abductions, right?

You've been conned by the Illuminati. Major majestic time.
