If you're anything like me, you'd have noticed that the Dark Series is getting a bit repetative BUT 'Dark Secret' is thankfully a little bit different.
For one, the lead female (Colby) is as fiery as they come and proves a real handful for the Carpathian: Rafael. Moreson than the usual up's and down's of the Carpathian/Human relationship.
Previous books have often felt as though they would always result in the male and female living happily ever after together, but there's a hint in this book that nothing is as simple as that.
The author has also introduced an interesting sub-plot that should keep the series going for several books yet.
If you're a fan, you'll buy it because you're addicted like the rest of us, if you're new to the series then buy it and delight in the authors wonderful writing style, her beautiful imagination and delicious characters.

I think Miss Feehan deserves a round of applause. The woman is brilliant, this is definitely one of the BEST Carpathian novels. Rafael is the ultimate dominant male and Colby is the ultimate independant woman - the chemistry is explosive and their story is heart warming. I also like the way that we find out clues to do with the devious plannings of the vampires and how their blood now has a virus that attacks healers. Very interesting and gripping stuff. Highly reccommended.

Colby Jansen and Rafel's story is probably Ms Feehans hottest installment of the Carpathia saga ever. The book sizzles with passion, devotion, sex and Carpathian magic. Colby struggles to raise her younger brother and sister and run the family ranch. She has no time for men. Strong willed and devoted to her family she rebels against the wealth of feelings and passion Rafel stirs in her. Confused, angry, Colby fears she will lose herself and her family if she admits she loves her life mate, the most ALPHA male Carpathian we have met so far. (He makes Gregori look like a pussy cat). Colby must battle humans, vampires, their human puppets, and herself before she can embrace the feelings she holds for her new lifemate. The sexiest, hottest Carpathian book ever.

I've tracked down and read the whole series since I discovered C Feehan whilst ordering the new JR Ward book. This is definitely the best in the series, with a real Alpha male lead in Rafael, and a heroine not like those seen so far. She resists him almost until the end, which makes a nice change, and normally, I read paperbacks and sell them on for space, but this is definitely a keeper up there with Mikhails and Gregori's stories. The last few were a bit wishy-washy, but this one has made me go out and preorder his brother, Riordan's book (Carpathians Book 0) due out in Nove 2007 from amazon.co.uk.

I've been obsessed with Feehan's Dark series the last week and a half. Some of the books are really well written with brilliant characters and plots that actually have depth and flow (the early books are the best!!!). Some of the books have great characters and OK plots that's feel slightly forced (but one can live with it because one loves the characters). Some start out brilliant and then fall flat/explode into a bloody mess. This is the second book I could not finish. The heroine starts out strong and very likeable, but before too many chapters she has mutated into a complete imbecile who basically endangers everyone's life because she's so "independent" - even though she's supposedly able to sense what's going to happen or what's happening...because she hasn't taken time to listen/think/remember what's happened to her etc. I slogged over half way through hoping it would get better, but I couldn't bear it. The writer was probably working to a deadline and cranked the story out in a month or two and then handed it over to the editors or something. I'm just glad my copy came from the library because if I'd bought this one I'd be seething. I have purchased a number of her stories and I hope the ones I haven't yet read will avoid degenerating into stupidity. If Dark Predator (which is coming in the post) ends up in this category I'm going to have vampire-kittens!!! This book just feels as if the author was obliged to meet a deadline. The writing is stodgy and full of the author telling us what the characters are feeling instead of letting the characters tell us or showing us through the action. Maybe I'm picky, but that to me is like fingernails on a chalkboard. It's bad writing and it irritates me because I know she can write very well. I can't believe her heart was in this story. If you love characters who continue to do the most stupid thing possible (or refuse to take on board what they experienced/learned five minutes-hours-days before) you will love this book.

I found this one slightly disturbing as Rafael (hope that's spelt right ) wouldn't listen to the word no, so I'm not sure that I agree with previous comments about it being romantic.
