Product Description

"The faces were disfigured: all sores, terrible teeth and mouths, and they were all biting, like biting towards me. It was like a vision from hell, worse than anything you could ever dream about, and the stench coming from them was terrible. They just rose up out of the ground, staring at me, trying to attack me - but they couldn't because they had no bodies that I could see. Just the heads. I'll never forget them. I thought I was going to die at that moment. I was calling out to my wife and Jim and Margaret. The heads were shrieking. It was as if they were waiting for Sherrin to kill me. Like I was some sort of offering that he was making to them." from "Mr Gant and the Neighbour from Hell". An innocent housewife, a callow young curate, a curious schoolboy, an amiable pensioner, and others like them. Ordinary people, leading ordinary lives in present-day Ireland. Until unwittingly, each opened a door into the unknown, and allowed strange forces to enter their lives. Through their shocking, true stories, "The Dark Sacrament" charts the terrifying struggle against the preternatural, battles that only ended with the intervention of that most valiant of churchmen - the exorcist.

From the Inside Flap

"Slowly, the ground in front of him began to open up, and the
boy found himself on the rim of an enormous cavern-like space.
Down in its depths he saw a throne. There was a figure seated upon it, but
Gary insists that 'it wasn't the Devil', that it was an entity that would
make itself known to him by and by.
But his attention at that moment was not on the throned figure, for from
all parts of that great cavern, beings with wings began to rise. He
identifies them as demons. They were flying up towards him: hundreds of
them.
Even at that great distance, the boy could make out their eyes; all seemed
to be focused on him, as though a signal had been given and all were
launching themselves simultaneously into the attack."

- From the chapter "The Boy who Communes with Demons"

5.0 out of 5 stars Reads like fiction but is fact, 26 Oct 2006
This review is from: The Dark Sacrament: Exorcism in Modern Ireland (Paperback)
This is one of the scariest books I've come across in a long while. I love horror stories and anything to do with the supernatural and I thought this was fiction when I saw the cover. But it seems to be all true. It gave me the shivers some of the stories, and they are all in modern day Ireland. I don't think anybody would be able to read this and not think again about good and evil. I don't know if the devil really exists but these stories made me think deeply about this and other questions.

5.0 out of 5 stars An important book, 28 Feb 2007

Mrs M Power (Wexford, Ireland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Dark Sacrament: Exorcism in Modern Ireland (Paperback)
Our house was plagued for three months last year by all sorts of hauntings. We would be woken up in the middle of the night by noises and shapes appearing. It was terrible, none of us could sleep properly, we were all distressed. I went to the PP but he didnt seem to take it seriously so I had to go to another priest who did. He knew somebody who had dealt with this kind of thing before. He was an old priest I'd say about 80 and retired. He came and said a Mass but nothing happened then. He had to say two more Masses and bless the house. He found out that our daughter was the focus for the hauntings and he prayed with her. Eventually the thing went away never to return again.

I would say to anyone who is in this position to keep trying to get help if people don't believe you or don't take it seriously. I read this book from cover to cover and it showed me that more people are in the same situation. I think anyone who reads this book will realise that they aren't alone with this. I want to thank the writers and also the people who told their stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book blew me away!, 27 Feb 2007

This review is from: The Dark Sacrament: Exorcism in Modern Ireland (Paperback)
I have just finished reading The Dark Sacrament and what a read it is!!! But be warned, if you're easily frightened this is probably not for you. I love ghost stories and anything about the paranormal so from the first page I was riveted and read it over three nights.

The authors have written nine true life accounts of exorcism in today's Ireland and that's the really scary part. As I kept reading I was wondering how on earth the victims survived with their sanity in tact.

What I like about Kiely and McKenna's writing is that it never bores you. They bring you right inside the lives of the victims so that you really FEEL their fear and what they went through. There's one case about a little boy and a demon that gave me sleepless nights.

It also made me think about fortune tellers and psychic phone lines in a totally different light. It's terrible how ignorant some of us can be. One woman rang a psychic phone line and a few days later she felt the presence of an old woman in the house, then her little daughter started seeing her.

This is a well researched and well written book. If I could give The Dark Sacrament six stars I certainly would. A must read!
