This is a dark book indeed - and aptly named. I read thrillers fairly regularly and wouldn't say I'm particularly squeamish or easily scared, but this book has an acute sense of realism that I found quite disturbing. The cast of characters are truly unlikeable and I had little empathy for even the main protaganist, Libby, and although not someone who has to like the people I'm reading about, in this case it just added to the sense of gloom. I thought the cattle slaughter scene was one step too far and really didn't feel the need to read that bit and consequently skipped the whole chapter. However, it is a horribly compelling book and although I was desperate to know the outcome, paradoxically I shied away from picking it up.
It's not what I would call an 'enjoyable' read, but it does have an original plot and it did make my heart pound in dread, which are what thrillers are supposed to do. Read this if you're not easily unnerved, but if you have a slightly sensitive nature I'd leave it well alone.

On the positive side it is a well written book with characters of a particularly dysfunctional mould.
I tried to like this book but I found most of the characters far too depressing and not liking pretty much anything about Libby Day, or her family, it made it tough going.
It's hard enough to struggle through a book if you are unsure about it but when you really take a dislike to the main protagonist - Libby Day - it becomes a bit pointless carrying on (although regrettably I did!!).
Some of the satanic scenes were beyond appalling but, putting that aside, this book had little in way of character engagement for me.
I just didn't like it at all which is a shame because I thought at the outset I would.

Brilliantly executed idea, great control of the storyline from 4 or 5 different points of view. Never lags, always interesting and an unpredictable ending. It's a very dark story but suffused with a love of real people (who are difficult), family and the land. The 1980s could be another era but beautifully portrayed. Couldn't recommend it highly enough.
