Product Description

Sarazen is a silicant, an android existing in a highly organised and rigid society where individuals are designed to perform unique functions. Created and maintained by The Mother, each silicant coexists in harmony to pursue their primary function, the protection of the primitive organic creatures with whom they share their world.

Sarazen, a career 'troubleshooter' is called to examine a rogue named Cole with orders to fix his malfunction or send him for 'renewal', but Cole is unlike any silicant Sarazen has yet encountered.

Cole's enlightening revelations lead Sarazen to make the courageous and perilous decision to leave the comfort of The Mother's influence and find the true meaning of the silicants' existence and the horrifying reality of their collective fate.

Dark Phase is a cerebral, powerful and thought provoking Science Fiction story with a plot that will leave you captivated even after the final page has been turned.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent stuff 3 Nov 2012

Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this. The story was extremely well constructed, the main character was beautifully written, and the narrrative was excellent right through to the conclusion.

Missed out on a full 5 stars for a somewhat predictable antagonist, however did not detract from what was an excellent exploration of what it means to be human, a debate over moral principles, and whether or not what we are taught fixes our opinions for life. Give this a read, even if you are not a sci-fi fan

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic tale of synthetic life 4 Oct 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Dark Phase reminds me of some of those classic Asimov stories I read back in the nineties. The idea of synthetic lifeforms, especially ones as evolved as these androids. Sarazen is an intriguing characters and contains many human traits that make you sometimes forget exactly what or who he is. The malfunction of Cole is very similar to some of Susan Calvin's assignments and I'm pleased to say this story replicates the better parts of those stories.

Well written, a credit to the author and well worth getting for just a dollar. To quote the classic Robocop - `I'd buy that for a dollar!'

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW 24 Sep 2011
By Mandi
Format:Kindle Edition
This is the best book Jonathan Davison has written yet, a witty yet poignant account of an artificial lifeforms journey through his and his species evoloution into free thinking, emotional beings. Gripping to the last page and emotional to the end, this book will keep people talking about it for a long time!

4.0 out of 5 stars A must-read! 1 Dec 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Dark Phase is a pretty engrossing read. It has a pretty cryptic prologue, but it makes perfect sense by the end which is unexpected and requires the reader to apply some thought. (Actually I thought it a bit abrupt - maybe as I was just really enjoying the book and didnt want it to end!).

I would not really recommend this book to younger readers, it is quite adult in many respects and although not adult in explicit content, it might be a bit over some peoples heads!

I loved the dialogue, the author is particularly good at writing credible, interesting interaction. At no point did I think it was cliched or stock sci-fi fayre. The characters are good and stack up well and I enjoyed the mystery surrounding 'The Mother' and Sarazen's relationship with her which kept you wondering.

Other reviewers mention Asimov when comparing this book to others but I would not say that Dark Phase was trying to replicate the master's work, they just both happen to be about artificial intelligence and a possible future of our society. The ideas are good and the plot comes together nicely without too much reliance on techy jargon, enough is left to the imagination.

All in all, this is one of the best books I have read from an indie author and easily beats many others I have that have gone through the standard publishing houses.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you don't like sci fi, try this! 13 Feb 2013
Format:Paperback
I was recommended this by a friend as a sci fi book for those who don't like sci fi! I really enjoyed it. The characters are all believable and distinct, the story keeps you gripped to the end, and makes you think. I would read more books from this author, and will be recommending this to others.
