More About the Author

M.G. (Maria Guadalupe) Harris was born in Mexico City and grew up in Manchester, England.

As a teenager, during regular visits to her father in Mexico, M.G. became fascinated by Mayan archaeology. She made several trips to Mayan ruins in Yucatan and Chiapas and one such trip gave her the seed of the idea of what would later become The Joshua Files.

M.G. studied biochemistry at St Catherine's College and St Cross College, Oxford University. M.G. spent several years working in research laboratories before setting up her own internet company. A skiing accident in 2004 forced M.G. to spend many weeks recuperating from surgery.

The first title in The Joshua Files, 'Invisible City' was the UK's fastest-selling children's fiction debut for 2008. The series went on to sell in 17 languages.

Her new adventure series, GEMINI FORCE ONE was originally devised and developed by Gerry Anderson (creator of THUNDERBIRDS, CAPTAIN SCARLET, TERRAHAWKS) before his death and completed by M.G. with the approval of the Estate of Gerry Anderson, led by his son Jamie.

M.G. lives in Oxford with her husband and their two daughters.

About the Author

M.G. Harris was born in Mexico City and grew up in Frankfurt, Germany and Manchester, England. As a teenager, during regular visits to her father in Mexico, M.G. became fascinated by Mayan archaeology. She made several trips to Mayan ruins in Yucatan and Chiapas and one such trip gave her the seed of the idea of what would later become The Joshua Files. M.G. was interested in molecular biology and studied biochemistry at St Catherine's College and St Cross College, Oxford University. M.G. spent several years working in research laboratories before setting up her own internet company. A skiing accident in 2004 forced M.G. to spend many weeks recuperating from surgery. She decided to keep a promise she'd made to herself to one day pursue a career as a novelist. Writing on a laptop next to her bed, M.G. began work on a techno thriller which combined her two intellectual loves - archaeology and biology. From this initial manuscript came the idea for a story featuring a young boy searching for a lost Mayan codex ... and The Joshua Files were born. The first title in the series, 'Invisible City' was the UK's fastest-selling children's fiction debut for 2008. M.G. lives in Oxford with her husband and their two daughters.

This is the first of the Joshua Files books that I have read to my children and now I need to go back and get the others. This is not a great place to start as there is a lot of back-story that it is better to know, or otherwise the complex plot is quite confusing.

The story is told in first person form and sometimes as a blog (this does not make it a good choice to read out loud but that was my fault). Josh is a special boy who has been genetically altered so that he can read some ancient codices that give information about how to prevent a world catastrophe in 2012, as predicted by the Mayans. He is able to time travel using an ancient artifact and some people think he is a time travelling hero called Arcadio. Mix into this a sect who genetically modified him and that can also time travel to destroy the codices and a teenage romantic interest with a Mexican girl called Ixchel and you get some idea of the story.

The romantic bits are funny to me but my children are not old enough yet to appreciate how funny they are and turn their noses up at those bits. The combination of science and cultures is excellent but it helps that I have a Spanish connection and we have a local Capoiera Club, otherwise I would be even more confused about what was going on. It is exciting and it captures the children's imagination. They are always trying to guess what will happen next and that is the most important thing. It is a book where they keep asking for more.

This book carries on with the fast paced other books in the series. It was an edge of the seat can't put it down type of book. I read it in a matter of days, purely because I didn't want to put it down. If you have read the other three books, then you will love this one as well. Also, I bought just this before my holiday and it came before I went, so I was happy with the delivery service. All in all, great buy!

Well in this book it takes a unexpected turn when Ixchel and Josh get together. I think that this is the most thrilling trilogy I have ever read! I started reading it on Holiday after I finished 'Zero Moment (The Joshua Files #3)'. And you know what it just pulls your attention and me, (Using my dad's account (Im 12)) I spent the whole day reading this book. I wish I read it slower because when I finished it there was nothing to do for another 2 weeks. So, If I were to recommend this book, it would to be to people who love a bit of adventure and finding new things out about the world. Dr Who fans would DEFIANTLY love this trilogy.

P.S. In my advice I would read them in order because if you don't, it gives things away and its a bit confusing because it is based on a complex plan.

If you are looking at this page and you already read the first 3 books in the series, then you probably don't need the review. You will already know you like the series!

If not, then please read the review, but note that I have not read the first 3 books, and if it sounds your cup of tea you should go and get book 1 first and work through!

The author was born in Mexico and then moved, as a child, to Germany and then the UK. According to her bio, her formative years were spent watching Dr Who and Blakes 7. So, you can clearly see the DNA for this book. A combination of time-travelling and Mayan history.

The story is told in the first person, and the eponymous narrator, Joshua, is an engaging companion. There is a good mixture of pace in the book - some thrilling action sequences, but also a fair degree of teen romance (be warned if this is off-putting to you!). The plot is intricately constructed, as it plays with the concept of time travel, paradoxes and parallel time streams. I enjoyed this, as I like books to make me work a bit!

The book picks up from plot elements from previous stories, but explains them enough that the book largely stands on its own. A time-travelling boy saves the world and tries to work out his relationship with a girl. The jumping between realities and starting point in a secret city makes the story rather different to most kids books, and it deals with the confusing implications of the time travelling without becoming confused itself, which is good.
A good book for anyone who enjoyed previous Joshua Files stuff, or who likes Doctor Who or the like.

The fourth book in the series Carries on the continuing story of josh and his adventures to protect the world from a disaster in 2012 , which leads to time travel to help in the quest for answers for the future and to defeat the people trying to stop him ,
Another must read and not just for kids

My son is reading these and thoroughly enjoying these adventures. He got it as a Christmas present and was very excited to get stuck in.
