This is probably the best movie to watch on Halloween. Though not terribly frightening or bloody, it has the feel of a classic old time horror movie that just feels good to watch on Halloween, much like Night of the Living Dead does. The movie initially focuses on Bubba (played by the always great Larry Drake), a mentally challenged man in a small Midwestern town. He has a very close friendship with a young girl named Mary Lee. One day while they are playing as usual, Mary Lee gets attacked by a dog, and Bubba comes to her rescue. Bubba then is shocked and then holds her almost lifeless body in his arms saying "Bubba didn't do it!" to her mother. Immediately, the whole town thinks that Bubba did do it. A group of four local men, led by the town mailman Otis (Charles Durning) and known for having been very cruel to Bubba in the past, decide to deal with Bubba in their own personal way. The mob eventually tracks poor Bubba down in a field where he is hiding by masquerading as a scarecrow. Before they even give Bubba a chance they unload on him with their guns and kill him. Immediately after doing so, they get a call on the radio saying the girl is okay and that Bubba actually saved her life!. The mob, in an effort to save themselves and hide their evil deed, make their murder look like self-defense by placing a pitchfork in Bubba's lifeless hands. The killing goes to trial but all four men are found not guilty. But soon things start turning bad as it seems like Bubba is back from the grave to seek revenge. All of the men believe they got off free and clear, and swear an oath of secrecy. It's no going to work though as they start to die one by one in horrible ways made to look like farming accidents. Dark Night of the Scarecrow is a great horror movie, originally made for TV back in the eighties. The acting from the cast was truly great especially from Larry Drake's character Bubba whom you really end up feeling sorry for, Lane Smith and Charles Durning were also terrific as the typical and narrow minded locals from a small town. The suspense and atmosphere are perfectly developed here and the rising sense of paranoia and the "whodunit" factor really make Dark Night of the Scarecrow a horror movie that gets your attention and keeps it for the duration right up to the final scene, there was never a dull moment despite the fact that the film didn't have any gore or blood but still had some tense moments. I highly recommend this great horror flick and two thumbs up.

A mentally challenged young man called Bubba (Larry Drake) is out playing with a small girl he is friends with when the girl is attacked and seriously injured by a dog. A group of locals, who have never liked Bubba, instantly blame him and get together to find and administer their own punishment on the man. Bubba hides disguised as a scarecrow but the locals see through the disguise and kill him despite Bubba's plea that he was innocent. The group then find out that Bubba was the one who actually saved the girl.. In court the group are found not guilty due to a farce of a trial but it isn't long before they get their comeuppance another way..

This is hugely entertaining thanks in part to the atmosphere of the film and the great story. It's very low budget but really does have a great look about it. There isn't any gore as it's made for TV but don't let that put you off. It is dark, creepy and tense and the mostly suggestive deaths are fairly creative. It's very tame of course by todays standards but you really won't care as the atmosphere is there by the bucketload. The acting is great by all, especially from Bubba and postman Otis Hazelrigg (Charles Durning) who excels as the leader of the lynch mob. Unlike most of these films there are a few emotional scenes involving Bubba and the little girl (played superbly by Tonya Crowe) and their friendship is very touching and believable. It's really not hard at all to feel sad for Bubba thanks to the great acting in the film.

Overall highly recommended and more than worthy of its cult status. 4/5

THIS REVIEW IS FOR DARK NIGHT OF THE SCARECROW ON BLU-RAY!

If you have read the synopsis for the movie on any of the dvd reviews you will know DNOS is an atmospheric made-for-tv chiller about a mentally handicapped young man who is mistakenly blamed for a young girls death and is murdered by a gang of redneck vigilantes with a grudge against the poor chap. Of course Bubba comes back for vengence in one of the origional and still the best killer scarecrow movie ever made.

Ok, this isnt a review of the film so much as the VCI blu-ray, I agree with all the other reviewers that dark night is an excellent little movie and well worth anybodys time.

The big question is though, 'if I own the dvd already is their any point in upgrading to blu-ray?'

the answer is a resounding YES!.

For starters the picture quality is better, its not a massive leap forward admittedly but its clear vci did a proper job putting it on blu-ray rather than just upscaling their dvd and the image is definately sharper and the colors slightly richer than the dvd looks upscaled through my ps3. Extras wise we get a collectors booklet thrown in as well as some other new extras including a production commentary, a q&a with larry drake, tanya crowe and j.d. feigelson, a broadcast promo and a behind the scenes photo gallery. All on top of the extras already found on the dvd.
Like the dvd, the blu-ray is totally region-free and plays on my ps3 with no problems at all. This one is definately worth the upgrade.
